One of them was: Win an Academy Award for Best Actor.

It was bold, wild, and near improbable.

Twenty years later, that same kid stood on the stage of the Dolby Theatre with the golden statue in his hands.

His name is Matthew McConaughey.

When Matthew came on the Mindvalley Podcast, I asked him about that list. There was no vision board. No coach. No SMART goal framework, no deadline, nothing on that page that would survive a performance review. He wrote down what his soul wanted, and then he went and lived his life. Every goal on the list eventually came true.

Then he said five words I have never been able to shake.

“The target attracts the arrow.”

Your vision isn’t passive. It pulls the arrow of your life toward it, it nudges you toward the right rooms, the right people, the right ideas, long before you can see how any of it connects.

Which raises the harder question. If naming the target is that powerful, why do so many of us name it and then watch nothing happen for years?

The rule you were handed instead

Most of us were given exactly one instruction for how goals work. Want it more. Work longer. Get up earlier, push harder, and if it still isn’t moving, you clearly didn’t want it badly enough.

Somebody installed that rule in you before you were old enough to inspect it. It is why you find yourself checking your progress every week like a man refreshing a tracking page, and why the checking makes it worse rather than better.

Effort was never the only variable.

José Silva figured out what the actual variables are. Silva created the Silva Method, and he died in 1999, but the framework he left behind is the one I still run every significant goal of my life through. He trained roughly 6 million people to access altered states of mind, and when you teach 6 million people anything, your method stops being theory and starts getting precise. I became a certified Silva instructor in 2002.

His claim was this. Every manifesting block a human being can have falls into three categories.

Desire. Belief. Expectancy.

Not fifteen. Three. And if even one of them is missing, the whole system leaks.

Key 1: Desire — but not the kind you think

Most people set goals from their head. They pick something reasonable. Something achievable. Something they could defend in a meeting without anyone raising an eyebrow.

That isn’t a desire. That’s negotiation.

Real desire comes from somewhere lower down. It’s the thing you want so badly that saying it out loud feels faintly embarrassing, because it sounds too big, too audacious, too far from the life you’re currently standing in.

That embarrassment is the signal. Not the red light. The green one.

Here’s my rough test. If the goal doesn’t give you a small drop of vertigo when you say it to another human being, it probably isn’t the real one. It’s the edited version. The safe version, the one you pre-shrank so nobody would ask you who you think you are.

The author Joe Vitale put it better than I ever have. A good goal should scare you a little and excite you a lot.

Read that ratio carefully, because it matters. Ninety percent excitement, ten percent fear. If there’s no fear at all, the goal doesn’t require you to become anyone new, and the whole point of a real goal is that it drags a bigger version of you into existence to go and hold it.

So before you go any further, ask yourself one honest question about the thing you’re chasing.

Is this my true desire, or someone else’s desire to dress in Gucci?

A soul desire feels like exhaling. Hold it in your mind and something in your chest actually drops. An ego desire feels like tension, like you’re rehearsing a version of yourself for an audience that isn’t in the room. Sit with your goal for ten seconds and notice which one your body does.

You’ll know straight away. You’ll also be tempted to argue with it.

Key 2: Belief — three layers deep

This is where most manifesting teaching gets lazy. It tells you to just believe, as if belief were a light switch you could flip on your way out of the room.

It isn’t. Belief has layers, and you have to walk through all three.

Layer 1: Is this possible for anyone?

Has any human being on this planet ever done the thing you want to do? If the answer is yes, you’re fine. The possibility exists in the field. You aren’t chasing a fantasy; you’re chasing something with precedent.

Layer 2: Is this possible for someone like me, in this timeframe?

Notice those last three words, because this is the layer where most people quietly give up. Not out loud. They just stop taking the goal seriously, file it under someday, and let the inner critic run the numbers until it returns the verdict: not for someone like me.

Two things fix this layer. The first is the timeframe. Set your big goals three years out rather than one; one year creates pressure, and pressure creates the desperation that poisons everything downstream. Three years creates room. In three years, an ordinary person with the right beliefs can build the business, transform the body, write the book, find the love.

The second is harder, and I learned it by failing.

I got into the Silva Method as a teenager, and my very first goal was to heal my short-sightedness, because I hated wearing glasses. I failed miserably. I nearly abandoned the whole method over it. Then, on some later reread of the book, a line I’d skimmed past a dozen times finally landed. Silva said: don’t jump the gun. What he meant was, don’t try to heal cancer before you can heal dandruff.

So I picked something smaller. I had a serious case of acne, five years of it, five years of being called pimple-face at school. I applied the Silva healing work to my skin, and five weeks later I had clear skin, and it stayed.

That did something to me that had nothing to do with my face. It proved to my nervous system that reality bends. And that one small piece of evidence is what let me aim at something absurd the following year: in 1993 I qualified for the US Open Taekwondo Championships, representing my country. I had visualised that outcome for a year beforehand.

I do not think I could have believed the second thing without having lived the first.

Layer 3: Can I have this without it costing me something I can’t afford to lose?

Almost nobody talks about this one, and your subconscious runs it on every goal you set. It’s asking a protective question. If I actually get this, do I lose love? Safety? The person I’ve always been?

If some part of you believes the answer is yes, that part will quietly sabotage you, and it won’t feel like sabotage. It’ll feel like bad timing and busy weeks. Not weakness. Protection.

Now, at this point you may be thinking: hold on. Key one told me to stretch the goal, key two is telling me to shrink it. What exactly am I supposed to be doing?

Think of it like training for a marathon.

The goal is to cross the line at twenty-six miles. But you don’t lace up on day one and run twenty-six miles. You run one kilometre. Then three. Then five. Your body adapts, your endurance compounds, and one day the distance that was impossible is simply the distance you run on a Sunday.

Your belief system trains identically.

Hold the big desire. Don’t shrink it. But break the road to it into smaller goals that hand your belief system evidence it can actually feel. My acne was my one-kilometre run. Taekwondo was mile eight.

Start where your belief can breathe. Then scale.

Key 3: Expectancy — the one almost nobody reaches

This is the deepest of the three and the most misunderstood, because it arrives wearing the costume of two lesser things.

Hope says: I really want this to happen. Hope is beautiful, and it’s fragile, and underneath it sits doubt; you hope precisely because you aren’t sure.

Faith says: I trust this could happen. Stronger. Still living in the country of maybe.

Expectancy says something else entirely. This is already on its way, and I’m simply waiting for it to arrive.

Let me make that concrete, because it’s the difference that decides everything.

Imagine you lent a friend a thousand dollars, a real chunk of what you earn in a month — and he promised it back in a week. A week passes. Then three. Then he stops answering your calls, and by month three you’re furious. Then the message finally comes. He’s sorry, he lost himself for a while, the cheque is written, it’s in the mail, and here’s the tracking number.

Now check your body. The money is not in your account. Nothing material has changed. And you have completely stopped worrying about it.

That is expectancy. It isn’t excitement, and it isn’t optimism. It’s almost boring in its certainty, and it cannot coexist with anxious checking — because anxious checking broadcasts I don’t have this, and I’m afraid I never will, and the universe is a mirror.

Expectancy at its most extreme looks like total commitment with no hedge in it anywhere. David Ghiyam, who teaches Kabbalah on our Manifesting Mastery program, showed me what that looks like.

About fourteen years ago, when David and MaryRuth were both twenty-six and still just friends, MaryRuth was diagnosed with a breast tumour. She was already deep into health and wellness, and she came to David and asked what she could do spiritually, not just physically. She committed to forty days of green juice and a strict physical regimen. David gave her practices to run alongside it. And then he made a commitment of his own that still moves me when I think about it.

Every night for forty nights, he woke at midnight and stayed awake until dawn. He studied. He prayed. He lit a candle for her soul and held space for her healing with his entire being.

Forty nights. On day forty, her scan came back clear.

I’m not telling you that as medicine and I’m not claiming the practice is what cured her. I’m telling you because of what it shows about the posture. David didn’t do the protocol while privately assuming it wouldn’t work. He committed so completely that there was no room anywhere in his field for doubt.

That’s expectancy. Certainty in motion.

Here’s the practical version for the rest of us, and it’s the only diagnostic you need.

If it were already on its way, what would I be doing differently this week, and am I doing it?

If the honest answer is nothing, you’re in hope. Expectancy shows up in behaviour long before it shows up in results. Someone who knows a guest is coming doesn’t sit by the window wishing. They go and make up the guest room.

The three keys together

Desire is knowing what your soul actually wants, not what’s reasonable, not what you can defend, but the thing that’s almost too big to say out loud.

Belief is walking all three layers. Possible for anyone. Possible for me, in this timeframe. Safe for me to receive.

Expectancy is moving through your week as though the thing is already on its way, because your behaviour is the broadcast.

Miss one and the system leaks, and it leaks in a specific way. Burning desire with no belief becomes bitterness. Belief with no expectancy becomes white-knuckled hoping. Expectancy with no real desire is the worst of the three, because you’ll succeed at things that don’t matter to you.

But when all three are running at once, something shifts. Matthew wrote his goal on a piece of paper in a dorm room in 1992 with no plan and no idea how. He named it, he believed it, and he lived as though it were already on its way.

That’s DBE. Desire, belief, expectancy, and it took Silva 6 million students to work out that there were only ever three.

So take the biggest thing you’re currently chasing and be honest with yourself. Which of the three is it actually failing on? Leave a comment on this blog.
