It\u2019s not an <em>identification<\/em> problem, it\u2019s an <em>execution<\/em> problem.<\/p>\n<p>We know we\u2019d be happier if we exercised, read more, yelled at our children less, got more sleep, volunteered\u2026but somehow, those things don\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/my-new-book-about-habit-formation-as-distilled-in-21-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 21 strategies of habit change<\/a>\u00a0is so important. When we change our habits, we can change our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Because I wrote a book about habit change, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/books\/better-than-before\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Better Than Before<\/a><\/em>, I\u2019ve had countless conversations with people about their habits. I\u2019ve found that most habits and actions that people want to pursue fall into nine categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Energy<\/strong>: exercise and sleep<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Productivity<\/strong>: focus, work, progress<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Relationships<\/strong>: connect and deepen<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Recharging<\/strong>: relax and rest<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Order<\/strong>: clear and organize<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Purpose<\/strong>: reflect, identify, engage<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Mindful Consumption<\/strong>: eating, drinking, spending, scrolling<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Mindful Investment<\/strong>: save, support, experience<\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><strong>Creativity<\/strong>: learn, practice, play<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cMindful Investment\u201d is one of the most interesting categories.<\/p>\n<p>This category includes habits and actions related to the wise investment of our time, energy, and money. Are we spending those resources purposefully, in a way that reflects our values and support our long-term happiness?<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, a mindful investment requires a single action; sometimes, a consistent habit.<\/p>\n<p>Some investments make our current lives better\u2014buying an upgraded laptop, joining a monthly potluck dinner group with the new neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>Some investments set us up for a better future\u2014taking a weekly online course needed for a promotion, saving for a big trip.<\/p>\n<p>Some investments relate to ourselves, such as investing money in a new bike, and others put our values out into the world, such as investing time in composting.<\/p>\n<p>Some investments relate to things, such as buying a reading light, and others related to experiences, such as planning a day of rock-climbing. (Note that the line between \u201cthings\u201d and \u201cexperiences\u201d is often hard to draw\u2014a reading light is a thing, but it\u2019s really about the experience of reading.)<\/p>\n<p>Other examples of mindful investment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upgrading a frequently-used tool<\/li>\n<li>Investing in gear to support a hobby<\/li>\n<li>Volunteering to support a cause<\/li>\n<li>Setting aside time to pursue an aim<\/li>\n<li>Giving yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/everyday-luxuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everyday luxuries<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/we-must-have-treats-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy treats<\/a>\u2014when we give more to ourselves, we can ask more of ourselves<\/li>\n<li>Taking a class<\/li>\n<li>Participating in a Freecycle group<\/li>\n<li>Setting aside time to clear out crowded or cluttered areas<\/li>\n<li>Planning a trip<\/li>\n<li>Having a buy-nothing month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my own life, I\u2019ve found that if I don\u2019t pay attention, I tend to drift away from mindful investment. For instance:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Money: I\u2019m an <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/are-you-an-overbuyer-or-an-underbuyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under-buyer<\/a>, so often I don\u2019t buy things that would improve my work life or home life<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Time: I\u2019m focused on my to-do list, so I work on answering all my emails instead of doing the research I\u2019ve been meaning to do, to figure out the best organizations to which to donate<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Energy: I\u2019m a homebody, so sometimes I miss opportunities to push myself to have the adventures that will energize me and enrich my life<\/p>\n<p>So I often remind myself to invest my money, time, and energy wisely.<\/p>\n<p>In writing my book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/books\/life-in-five-senses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life in Five Senses<\/a><\/em>, about exploring the world through my senses, I realized the importance of investing in my sensory surroundings. Pay special attention to anything related to sleep and exercise\u2014they\u2019re very important for happiness, so worth the investment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Healthy treats and everyday luxuries make us happier and boost our feeling of self-command. What are your healthy treats?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a skill you\u2019ve always wanted to learn, for work or for fun?<\/li>\n<li>Could you make a small investment that would unlock a big benefit? For instance, if you bought an outdoor chair, you could have coffee on your porch; if you bought some graphic-design software, you could do better work on a creative project.<\/li>\n<li>What values are important to you, and how might you use your time, energy, or money to support them?
