Organize the others, take consistent and persistent action, and market the complaint in a format and with a focus that will lead to action.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, though, I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s what we\u2019re really after. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some others:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to let off steam<\/li>\n<li>to signal group affiliation<\/li>\n<li>to create hope that things might get better<\/li>\n<li>to increase one\u2019s status by selfishly demanding more<\/li>\n<li>to gain affiliation by complaining on behalf of someone else<\/li>\n<li>to gain status by demanding more for others who can\u2019t speak up<\/li>\n<li>to validate our feelings by seeking acknowledgment from others that their grievance is legitimate<\/li>\n<li>to preemptively lower expectations or manage blame<\/li>\n<li>to conceal our fear or embarrassment<\/li>\n<li>to avoid responsibility by pointing to someone else<\/li>\n<li>to establish dominance or control in a situation <\/li>\n<li>to bond with others through shared experiences of dissatisfaction<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Not on the list, because it belies almost all of these: \u201cWhining in the face of imperfection often ruins what you\u2019ve already got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whining is the evil cousin of complaining.
