However, what if you\u2019re focusing on the wrong things? As Peter Drucker said, \u201cManagement is doing <em>things right<\/em>; leadership is\u00a0doing the <em>right things<\/em>.\u201d In other words, what counts that you\u2019re not counting?<\/p>\n<p>If you examine a company\u2019s balance sheet, you\u2019ll find assets, liabilities, and equity clearly listed. When you review a company\u2019s profit and loss statement, you\u2019ll encounter revenue and expenses. While I acknowledge the importance of these financial elements, one may wonder why certain vital aspects, such as employee commitment, customer loyalty, the organization\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/reputation-you-cant-run-from-your-shadow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reputation<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/how-credible-are-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credibility<\/a> of its leaders, are not explicitly included. Are they suggesting that those factors are unimportant? As Tony Robbins, the author, coach, and speaker, said, \u201cSetting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.\u201d This truism holds true for business as well as your personal life.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Matters Most to You?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>What matters most to you? It\u2019s a simple yet profound question that prompts us to reflect on the things that hold the most significance in our lives, helping us understand our fundamental priorities and values. However, that\u2019s not always easy. As Albert Einstein said, \u201cMany of the things you can count, don\u2019t count. Many of the things you can\u2019t count, really count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Examine aspects that are commonly overlooked but hold value.<\/p>\n<p>In business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is your organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/business-management\/how-to-destroy-creativity-and-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>innovative<\/em><\/a>, and does it <em>respond quickly<\/em> to changing market conditions?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a <em>streamlined organization<\/em>, or do you get weighed down by bureaucracy and red tape?<\/li>\n<li>Do leaders <em>set the bar high<\/em> or tolerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/mediocre-behavior-is-a-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mediocrity<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Are employees genuinely <em>committed to the cause<\/em> or are they merely following orders?<\/li>\n<li>Do employees <em>work in unison<\/em>, or do they operate at cross-purposes with each other?<\/li>\n<li>Are your employees <em>loyal<\/em>, or would they jump ship for a better offer?<\/li>\n<li>Do people prioritize <em>long-term customer relationships<\/em> over short-term sales?<\/li>\n<li>Are your employees <em>flexible<\/em>, and do they <em>adapt well to change<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>Do you foster <em>win-win<\/em> supplier relationships, or do you seek the upper hand?<\/li>\n<li>Do you capture <em>knowledge <\/em>from departing employees, or do you allow that vital information to slip out the door?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On a personal note:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is your <em>mindset<\/em> propelling you forward, or is it holding you back?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <em>invest in the future<\/em>, or do you refuse to make sacrifices?<\/li>\n<li>Do you remain true to your <em>values,<\/em> or do you bend to peer pressure?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <em>give <\/em>as much as you take, <em>exercise your mind<\/em> as much as your body, and live an <em>honorable life<\/em> that makes you proud?<\/li>\n<li>Do you generally try to <em>please yourself<\/em> or satisfy others?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <em>try your best<\/em>, or do just enough to get by?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <em>appreciate what you have<\/em>, or do you continuously strive for more?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <em>listen to your conscience, <\/em>or does it give you the silent treatment?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If these things count, why aren\u2019t you counting them?<\/p>\n<h3>It\u2019s About What Truly Counts<\/h3>\n<p>Some people believe that if things are difficult to quantify, they can be overlooked. However, this perspective is misguided. The brilliance of a groundbreaking concept, the spark of ingenious inspiration, or the depth of artistic expression defies straightforward measurement. Just because creativity can\u2019t be distilled into numbers doesn\u2019t diminish its crucial role in pushing the boundaries of human potential.<\/p>\n<p>Considering this, how significant are innovation, flexibility, and adaptability for an organization? And how does one gauge the intensity of someone\u2019s love or the depth of someone\u2019s happiness? The fact is, the intangible aspects that evade easy measurement do not diminish their importance. As the saying aptly puts it, \u201cIf it\u2019s not a priority, you\u2019ll find an excuse.
