Other values<\/a> also serve as our guiding light, helping us lead happy and productive lives. Yet despite their obvious importance, people often need friendly reminders from parents, teachers, or bosses to recognize and follow them. Why are these reminders even necessary?<\/p>\n

Guiding Principles That Shape Us<\/h3>\n

The following are key principles for living a fulfilling<\/a> and productive life. This list is just a starting point for identifying the values you hold dear. As author Idowu Koyenikan said, \u201cA highly developed value system is like a compass. It serves as a guide to point you in the right direction when you are lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Personal responsibility can\u2019t be delegated.<\/strong><\/span> If you look in the mirror and don\u2019t like what you see, don\u2019t blame the mirror.<\/p>\n

Choices are easy; living with them is the hard part.<\/strong><\/span> You have the freedom to choose, but you\u2019re not free from the consequences of those choices.<\/p>\n

Your mindset matters more than you think.<\/strong><\/span> Watch what you believe because your beliefs have a way of becoming your reality. If you believe you can\u2019t<\/a>\u2026you won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Keep your promises.<\/strong><\/span> When you make a promise<\/a>, you\u2019re not giving your word in erasable pencil, you\u2019re inscribing your commitment in indelible ink.<\/p>\n

Go the extra mile.<\/strong><\/span> If something needs to be done, do it. It may not be your responsibility, but it\u2019s a task worth doing.<\/p>\n

The only person you\u2019re qualified to judge is yourself.<\/strong><\/span> Virtue isn\u2019t demanding more of others; it\u2019s expecting more of yourself.<\/p>\n

Treat others the way that you want to be treated.<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Take the shoe-on-the-other-foot test<\/a>. How would you feel if the tables were turned?<\/p>\n

Mind your manners.<\/strong><\/span> Being polite may seem like a small thing, but it says volumes about who you are.<\/p>\n

Pull your own weight.<\/strong> <\/span>Be a team player rather than expecting others to shoulder the burden.<\/p>\n

Think of others before yourself.<\/strong><\/span> You can make a difference in someone\u2019s life or focus on improving your own.<\/p>\n

The truth never lies<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/span> Always tell the truth, or the truth<\/a> will tell on you.<\/p>\n

Be the reason someone smiles today.<\/strong><\/span> Throw kindness<\/a> like confetti.<\/p>\n

Remember your roots.<\/strong><\/span> Reach for the stars, but never lose sight of the garden that you grew in.<\/p>\n

Offer a helping heart.<\/strong><\/span> Be kind to someone who\u2019s in no position to help you.<\/p>\n

Material possessions wear out; memories last forever. <\/strong><\/span>Money should never be the cornerstone of your life, nor should it define you. Moments, rather than possessions, are the true treasures of life.<\/p>\n

Do what\u2019s right.<\/strong><\/span> Knowing what\u2019s right isn\u2019t as important as doing what\u2019s right<\/a>. One of the true tests of integrity is refusing to compromise your honor at any price.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s your life to live. Own it!<\/strong><\/span> The more you choose<\/em> to accept responsibility for your life, the more power you\u2019ll have to determine your destiny.<\/p>\n

Lead by example. <\/strong><\/span>Words express what\u2019s on your mind, but your actions reveal what\u2019s in your heart.<\/p>\n

A Friendly Reminder<\/h3>\n

These principles are essential to living a life of integrity and purpose<\/a>. It\u2019s not enough to believe in their importance \u2014 you must practice them every day. Don\u2019t wait for friendly reminders from others; let these values be the driving force in your life. Regardless of what others say or do, stay true to your values and let them be your North Star. As Mahatma Gandhi said, \u201cYour beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n
