There can be consolation in looking backward to fathom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2021\/07\/25\/richard-dawkins-death\/\">the staggering odds of never having been born<\/a>, and in looking forward toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2022\/01\/10\/alan-lightman-death\/\">the immortal generosity of our atoms<\/a>. Further still, and see<br \/>your smiling grandmother treading the cold ocean,<br \/>tiny lakes in her collarbones, your great-<br \/>great grandchildren drawing their names<br \/>in the sand with sticks. The seas<br \/>rising and falling, ice scraping the earth,<br \/>and pockets of life surviving \u2014 lee sides, hot springs,<br \/>protected places.
