I find, however, that my mental chatter is still going on in the background in the form of both thoughts and voices of commentary \u2013 firstly is this normal? and secondly is the meditation still \u2018working\u2019? And thirdly as I still appear to be the one talking to myself even though I am still saying SO-HUM is it helpful to say things to myself during my meditation that enhance my meditation, like: \u2018I am pure awareness\u2019, etc.? Thank you so much.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"main-content\">\n<p><strong>Response:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is perfectly normal to have background thoughts during meditation. If you are doing the meditation easily, without any mental tension or resistance to thoughts or sounds, then it is absolutely working. Meditation is working when the mind is allowed to settle into simple awareness. Lastly, don\u2019t add any self-talk to your meditation.
