Our closets become\u00a0crowded, our drawers overfill, our garages can\u2019t fit our cars, and our homes fill with countless products we thought were a good idea at the time; but in reality, rarely get used.<\/p>\n<p>Our lives soon become buried under everything we own.<\/p>\n<p>To counter these empty promises, I want to offer a simple, life-transforming question\u2014five simple words to ask before making any purchase.<\/p>\n<p>The question is this:\u00a0<em>But what if I don\u2019t?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whenever you feel the pull of consumerism, simply ask yourself the shortened version of this thought, \u201cWhat might I be able to do if I didn\u2019t make this purchase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every purchase contains an opportunity cost. The question,\u00a0<em>\u201cBut what if I don\u2019t?\u201d, <\/em>forces\u00a0us to recognize and articulate it.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t buy that large screen television, how much debt could you pay off?<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t buy the bigger\u00a0house, how much more money would you have to travel?<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t go clothes-shopping today,\u00a0how could you build up an emergency fund?<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t make this purchase on Amazon, what good could you accomplish in the world with the money instead?<\/p>\n<p>You know what you\u2019ve been promised\u00a0if you buy\u2026 <em>but what if you don\u2019t? How would your\u00a0life improve if you said \u2018no?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With every purchase we make, we sacrifice a small amount of freedom.
