You researched the company, studied the role, and prepared answers to impress the interviewer. But how honest were you? If you had been completely truthful, would you still have received the offer?<\/p>\n<p>What if you flipped the script? Imagine sharing both your successes and failures \u2014 mentioning your achievements while admitting a former employer questioned your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/posters\/the-13-key-ingredients-of-a-strong-work-ethic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work ethic<\/a> or acknowledging that you haven\u2019t always been reliable. Chances are, you wouldn\u2019t have been hired. That\u2019s why you highlight your strengths while downplaying the rest \u2014 even if it\u2019s not the whole truth.<\/p>\n<p>But what if the company isn\u2019t fully honest either? They tell you how amazing it is to work there, how much they value employees, and how dedicated they are to customers. Sounds great \u2014 but as the saying goes, \u201cIf it seems too good to be true, it probably is.\u201d They\u2019re not necessarily lying; they\u2019re painting a picture of how they <em>want<\/em> things to be, not necessarily how they are.<\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s face it \u2014 you did the same thing.<\/p>\n<h3>When the Truth Emerges<\/h3>\n<p>When both sides aren\u2019t fully honest, disappointment is inevitable. So, what\u2019s the solution? Honesty isn\u2019t just about words \u2014 it\u2019s about living up to standards you\u2019re proud of. Here are 10 ways to raise the bar on a personal level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/great-things-start-with-great-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expectations<\/a> for yourself and others.<\/li>\n<li>Take initiative instead of waiting to be told what to do.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/its-easier-to-criticize-than-to-contribute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Contribute<\/a> instead of complaining.<\/li>\n<li>Choose what\u2019s right over what\u2019s easy.<\/li>\n<li>Treat your word like a signed contract.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the value you bring, not just the hours worked.<\/li>\n<li>Earn rewards rather than expect them.<\/li>\n<li>Do your best instead of settling for less.<\/li>\n<li>Inspire those around you.<\/li>\n<li>Demand more from yourself than anyone else would.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Organizations should do the same. Employees seek workplaces where values matter \u2014 where ethics aren\u2019t just buzzwords and doing what\u2019s right isn\u2019t about building a public image, but about genuine integrity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Always tell the truth \u2014 or the truth will tell on you.<\/p>\n<h3>Close the Gap<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to present an idealized version of yourself, but the truth has a way of surfacing \u2014and when it does, the fallout isn\u2019t pretty. Rather than fabricating an image, <em>close the gap between who you are and who you want to be<\/em>. But remember, a relationship is two-sided: The organization must also close the gap between its ideals and reality. After all, if you\u2019re not proud of your current self, you have the power to change \u2014 <em>if you choose to<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you interview, be someone you\u2019re proud of. That way, you can be completely honest \u2014 and stand out for all the right reasons. I won\u2019t wish you \u201cGood luck,\u201d because you won\u2019t need it.
