These underlying schemas can heavily influence how we see and respond to things, often without us realizing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It\u2019s critical to know what you believe before you start thinking about what you want<\/em>,\u201d says Jon, \u201c<em>because your beliefs control your thoughts, your decisions, and your behaviors, and therefore your destiny<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, you can\u2019t get clear on who you are unless you question what you believe.<\/p>\n<p>Start with the basics: What do you believe about success? About love? About your body, your worth, and your future? Write it down.<\/p>\n<p>Then ask the only question that matters: Does this belief serve the life I\u2019m trying to create?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the work. And it\u2019s where all the others begin.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-name-your-emotions-in-real-time\">2. Name your emotions in real time<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s likely you\u2019ve had emotional reactions that you regretted later. For instance, sending a passive-aggressive email at work, only to realize the issue was more about you feeling undervalued than what the other person said. Or picking a fight with your partner right before an important event because you felt anxious and didn\u2019t know how to say it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Sometimes our heads and our hearts can have a difference of opinion on an issue<\/em>,\u201d Jon points out. He adds that it\u2019s a good idea to check your feelings with your brain.<\/p>\n<p>The faster you can name what you\u2019re feeling, the less likely you are to get dragged around by it. Even a <em>PLOS One<\/em> experiment found that <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0279303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when participants named their feelings while facing strong emotions, their reported distress significantly decreased<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the trick is being precise with what you say. Saying \u201c<em>I feel bad<\/em>\u201d tells you nothing. But saying \u201c<em>I feel resentful because I didn\u2019t speak up<\/em>\u201d gives you something to work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We need to bring consciousness to situations like that and stay with the issue till we work it out<\/em>,\u201d as Jon says, \u201c<em>till our head and our heart agree<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-track-your-emotional-triggers\">3. Track your emotional triggers<\/h3>\n<p>Most people don\u2019t realize how much of their behavior is just a reaction on loop. You get activated, you say something you didn\u2019t mean, and then you spend hours (maybe even days, months, years) untangling the mess.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One thing that has helped Peter\u2019s clients is journaling. According to him, it\u2019s a pattern finder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>When you can track what you do and how it makes you feel, you gain something powerful: the ability to analyze and the freedom to choose<\/em>,\u201d he shares. And when you know <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/how-to-journal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to journal<\/a>, it helps you put words to what you\u2019re living so you can actually understand it.<\/p>\n<p>Research has also found that when people kept a weekly reflection journal, they <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1811.02965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became more self-aware and made better decisions<\/a>. This practice helped them spot what was working, what wasn\u2019t, and how to handle situations more clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>And the better you get at that<\/em>,\u201d Peter adds,<em> <\/em>\u201c<em>the better you\u2019ll get at explaining yourself to life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-conduct-weekly-self-reviews\">4. Conduct weekly \u201cself-reviews\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>You probably move through most weeks without stopping to ask what any of it meant. One thing bleeds into the next, and before you know it, you\u2019re stuck in a rhythm that doesn\u2019t even feel like yours.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, most people are overwhelmed and exhausted. But they\u2019re not going to think about it, work on it, or even question it. Why? Because that\u2019s just the way life is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>They don\u2019t allow themselves to feel how sad they really are, how disappointed they may be in their relationships or in their financial life or in their career or in their level of health and fitness<\/em>,\u201d Jon points out. \u201c<em>Because what are they going to do about it anyway? They can\u2019t fix it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why reflection matters. Sure, some people do it through journaling. But there are other <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/self-introspection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-introspection<\/a> methods:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Three-question check-in.<\/strong> Ask yourself: What felt good this week? What drained me? What do I want more or less of next week?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy audit. <\/strong>Review how you spent your time. Mark each part of your day with a plus, minus, or neutral based on how it felt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cWas that mine?\u201d filter. <\/strong>When you notice a strong emotion, ask: Was that about me, or did I pick it up from someone else?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It might take a bit of trial and error, but whichever way you choose, make sure it\u2019s one that suits you.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-build-a-truth-team\">5. Build a \u201ctruth team\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, intrapersonal intelligence is internal. But that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t have mirrors. And you\u2019re definitely not meant to do all of this in isolation.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the great thing about having a truth team. They\u2019re your <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/accountability-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accountability group<\/a> and they\u2019re made up of people who will reflect you back to yourself without flinching. They\u2019ll tell you when your energy is off, when your story doesn\u2019t hold, and when you\u2019re hiding behind your own narrative.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, most people won\u2019t call you out when you\u2019re lying to yourself. They\u2019ll nod, agree, and keep the peace. That\u2019s <em>not<\/em> your team.<\/p>\n<p>But a 2024 umbrella review in <em>BMC Medicine<\/em> found <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12916-024-03260-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer support consistently improves self-efficacy, recovery, and mental health outcomes like depression and anxiety<\/a>. That means curated connections give you something solid to stand on, and they shape how well you show up in your own life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>High-quality friendships don\u2019t just fall out of the sky and happen on their own<\/em>,\u201d says Jon. \u201c<em>They take time, they take work, they take investment<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So surround yourself with people who hold the mirror steady.
