Seriously.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because one of the biggest problems I see with people who dream of being entrepreneurs is this:<\/p>\n<p>Early ideas that are brilliant get killed way too fast because they\u2019re<strong> judged through the lens of a business model and not through the lens of originality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019ve ever had an idea that lit you up, but you killed it because someone told you it wasn\u2019t \u201cpractical,\u201d you know exactly what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of bad advice I got early on. If I had listened, I would have lost hundreds of millions in revenue:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cYou\u2019re selling meditation CDs online? That\u2019s not a real business. That\u2019s a hobby.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 from a well-meaning aunt.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cThat\u2019s the stupidest idea I\u2019ve ever heard.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 on my festival idea, from an investor I met at Summit Series in 2010. If I\u2019d listened we would not have A-Fest, Future Human or Mindvalley U, festivals that attract thousands and are now in their 15th year.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cThat will never scale.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 from an early Twitter investor in Silicon Valley. The business in question Mindvalley Mastery, is now at $30M in revenue in year 3 and grew 60% year on year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If I had listened to any of these people, Mindvalley wouldn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Because business isn\u2019t just about logic.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about heart. It\u2019s about Intuition. It\u2019s about <em>Passion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And nobody knows this about you better than <em>YOU.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And to show you why, let me tell you a story about a man with a weird passion for fonts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-daydreamer-at-reed-college\">The daydreamer at Reed College<\/h2>\n<p>This young man was the son of a Syrian father and adopted American parents.<\/p>\n<p>He enrolled in Reed College, a small liberal arts school in Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>But he struggled.<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t focus on classes. He was restless. A daydreamer.<\/p>\n<p>Except for one subject.<\/p>\n<p>One class completely grabbed his attention: <strong>calligraphy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He became obsessed with fonts. The curves. The flow. The way letters could feel elegant or clumsy, depending on a single stroke.<\/p>\n<p>His friends thought it was strange. Useless.<\/p>\n<p>But to him, it was art.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, he and a buddy started a small personal computer company.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing unusual. There were 20 other computer companies in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>But their machine was different.<\/p>\n<p>It came with fonts. Beautiful fonts.<\/p>\n<p>An obsession that came directly from his calligraphy class.<\/p>\n<p>That \u201cuseless\u201d hobby became one of the defining features of the product.<\/p>\n<p>And this wasn\u2019t his only edge.<\/p>\n<p>He had three:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Design.<\/strong> He cared deeply about beauty and elegance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storytelling.<\/strong> He could inspire people with vision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consumer tech.<\/strong> He had an intuitive feel for what ordinary people wanted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The fusion of those three passions created Apple. That font-obsessed man was Steve Jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And years later, Apple became the world\u2019s first trillion-dollar company.<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine if someone had told him: <em>\u201cNobody cares about fonts. Just build a computer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Apple wouldn\u2019t be Apple.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-magic-of-your-dots\">The magic of your dots<\/h2>\n<p>Steve Jobs famously said: <em>\u201cYou cannot connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So the question is: what are your dots?<\/p>\n<p>What were those passions, weird obsessions, little sparks that lit you up?<\/p>\n<p>Those may be the signposts for the business you were meant to build.<\/p>\n<p>Your dots may have magic in them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-connecting-my-own-dots\">Connecting my own dots<\/h2>\n<p>When I look back at my life, I see them clearly.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I loved meditation.<\/strong> So in 2002, when the e-commerce boom hit, I built my first website around meditation CDs. People told me there wasn\u2019t much money in it. I told them I didn\u2019t care. I wanted to do what I loved. Boy, were they wrong. Meditation blew up in the 2010s. Today, the Mindvalley app alone is a $100M revenue business.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I loved festivals, music, and travel.<\/strong> So I created A-Fest. Critics said it was a terrible idea. Today, it\u2019s in its 13th year and has expanded into Future Human in Dubai and Mindvalley University.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I loved books.<\/strong> So I wrote one. That first book, <em>The Code of the Extraordinary Mind,<\/em> hit #1 globally on Amazon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I loved dabbling in AI.<\/strong> So I started an AI training company. That evolved into Mindvalley Mastery, which crossed $30M revenue in its third year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These weren\u2019t logical career moves.<\/p>\n<p>They were dots.<\/p>\n<p>And when I fused them together, I built not just one business\u2014but an ecosystem of businesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are YOUR dots?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What are those weird passions, quirks, obsessions, hobbies that you love but others find weird?<\/p>\n<p>There might be GOLD in them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are the five principles that guided me. I hope you find these useful too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-don-t-quit-your-day-job-yet-build-on-the-side-nbsp\">1. Don\u2019t quit your day job (yet). Build on the side.\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Quitting too early is the fastest way to anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Because now you\u2019re not creating. You\u2019re panicking about rent.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed at my job.<\/p>\n<p>As hard as it was, when I came home, I gave myself a rule:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>90 minutes every night<\/strong> to teach myself the skills I needed. I learned PHP coding. Built checkout flows. JavaScript. Everything by hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Six hours every weekend<\/strong> were sacred building time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Six months later, my first website went live.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, it covered my expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Only then did I quit.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how Mindvalley started: slowly, but safely.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-master-one-skill-then-fuse-it-with-what-you-love\">2. Master one skill\u2014then fuse it with what you love<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s a secret no one tells you: the fastest way to build a career around your love is to <strong>marry your passion with a craft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I call them two types of passions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Craft-Passions<\/strong>: skills you can master through practice (like sales, design, Facebook ads, Instagram ads, humorous video ads, comedy, vibe coding, or AI prompt engineering).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cause-Passions<\/strong>: the ideas and movements that light up your soul (like meditation, health, education, or sustainability).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your real leverage comes when you <strong>fuse the two<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For me, sales was a Craft-Passion. I didn\u2019t \u201clove\u201d it at first, but I loved mastering it. I studied it, practiced it, read every book I could.<\/p>\n<p>Meditation was my Cause-Passion.<\/p>\n<p>When I fused them\u2014sales + meditation\u2014I created copy so compelling for meditation CDs that I became the top affiliate in the world for the company I was reselling for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, that led to Mindvalley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the breakthrough: I wasn\u2019t just into meditation. I was into the <strong>alchemy of passions<\/strong>\u2014turning Craft into Cause.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-redefine-success-beyond-money\">3. Redefine success beyond money<\/h2>\n<p>The Mindvalley model of entrepreneurship has always been about <strong>balance<\/strong>. And the data now fully supports it.<\/p>\n<p>Shawn Achor, in <em>The Happiness Advantage<\/em>, shows that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doctors are <strong>19% more accurate<\/strong> in their diagnoses when they\u2019re happy.<\/li>\n<li>Optimistic salespeople close deals <strong>55% more effectively<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Happiness isn\u2019t a side effect of success. Happiness <em>drives<\/em> success.<\/p>\n<p>Hard work is hustle porn.<\/p>\n<p>It works if you\u2019re 20, living on Red Bull and ramen.<\/p>\n<p>But for adults? It\u2019s incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>Humans need joy. Meaning. Connection.<\/p>\n<p>So when you\u2019re building your business, set <strong>boundaries<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maybe you stop work at 7:30 p.m. so you can have dinner with your family.<\/li>\n<li>Maybe you block 4:00\u20135:30 p.m. every day for exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Maybe your first task every morning isn\u2019t email\u2014it\u2019s meditation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These boundaries don\u2019t slow you down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They fuel you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-question-the-rules\">4. Question the rules<\/h2>\n<p>In my book <em>The Code of the Extraordinary Mind,<\/em> I introduced the idea of Brules\u2014bullshit rules.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing: humans create rules to feel safe. Passed from father to son, mother to daughter.<\/p>\n<p>But the world changes fast.<\/p>\n<p>And old rules often don\u2019t apply anymore.<\/p>\n<p>What rules might you still be following?<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cYou need a steady paycheck before you try anything.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cDon\u2019t start unless you have investors.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cStick to one career your whole life.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cKeep your ideas realistic.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each one sounds safe.<\/p>\n<p>Each one kills originality.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why extraordinary entrepreneurs question the rules.<\/p>\n<p>And torch the Brules.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-build-identity-not-just-goals\">5. Build identity, not just goals<\/h2>\n<p>Most people set goals like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI want to start a business.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI want to make X amount.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But goals without identity are fragile. They collapse under stress.<\/p>\n<p>The real breakthrough comes when you adopt an identity:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>I am an entrepreneur.<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I am a creator.<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I am a teacher.<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>James Clear, in <em>Atomic Habits<\/em>, writes that identity is the deepest driver of behavior. When you embody the identity, the actions follow naturally.<\/p>\n<p>When I started identifying as a teacher\u2014even before Mindvalley existed\u2014I began to notice opportunities to teach everywhere. That identity pulled me forward.<\/p>\n<p>So don\u2019t just set goals.
