At the time, she spotted three styles in action: authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 1983 that researchers Eleanor Maccoby and John Martin expanded Baumrind\u2019s framework in the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com.my\/books\/about\/Handbook_of_Child_Psychology_Socializati.html?id=VUnuAAAAMAAJ&amp;redir_esc=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Handbook of Child Psychology<\/em><\/a> and introduced the fourth.<\/p>\n<p>They might sound a little clinical, but as renowned parenting educator <strong>Shelly Lefkoe<\/strong> points out in her <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EksppFyLV1g?feature=shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 Mindvalley stage talk<\/a>, \u201c<em>parenting is the greatest joy and the greatest challenge we will ever have in our lives<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so understanding Baumrind\u2019s parenting styles can give you a clearer picture of your own family dynamic.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-was-diana-baumrind-and-when-did-she-develop-parenting-styles\">Who was Diana Baumrind, and when did she develop parenting styles?<\/h3>\n<p>Baumrind didn\u2019t set out to write a parenting guide. But when she was a psychologist at UC Berkeley back in the 1960s, she observed parents and their preschoolers in action. All stem from Baumrind\u2019s parenting styles characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how influential her work is. Each one has its own vibe, its own set of rules (or lack of them), and its own impact on kids.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s walk through them, one by one.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-authoritarian\">Authoritarian<\/h3>\n<p>The very word \u201cauthoritarian\u201d comes from authority. It\u2019s a \u201c<em>my way or the highway<\/em>\u201d approach, where strict rules, rigid schedules, and very little wiggle room for negotiation live. Decision-making takes a hit, too, because choices were always made for them. Over time, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31102163\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trust erodes, communication shuts down, and fear replaces resilience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you know if you\u2019re showing up for your own children in this way? Ask yourself this:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Am I the kind of parent who says \u201cbecause I said so\u201d and leaves it at that?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Is my go-to move to lay down the law instead of teaching the lesson?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do I care more about getting a yes than getting a hug?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While it may be true that adopting this parenting style might keep things under control in the moment, it can cost the connection your children need to thrive.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-authoritative\">Authoritative<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAuthoritative\u201d also comes from the root word \u201cauthority.\u201d While authoritarian = \u201cstrict obedience to authority,\u201d authoritative = \u201crespected and trusted authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Out of Baumrind\u2019s four parenting styles, this one stands out as the sweet spot. It blends high expectations with high warmth. Parents set clear boundaries, and they enforce them with empathy, support, and open conversation.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, that looks like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explaining the \u201cwhy\u201d behind rules.<\/li>\n<li>Holding firm while listening to feelings.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging independence with guardrails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Shelly points out, \u201c<em>Your number one job is to parent in a way that has your child conclude positive beliefs about themselves and life<\/em>.\u201d And this parenting does just that.<\/p>\n<p>Marmee March from <em>Little Women<\/em> and Danny Tanner from <em>Full House<\/em> modeled this style. Sure, they\u2019re fictional, but they show how to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/raise-confident-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raise confident children<\/a> who respect rules and still feel safe to speak their minds.<\/p>\n<p>The fact of the matter is, when your children grow up with authoritatives, they\u2019re more likely to have <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1756655\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher self-esteem, stronger social skills, better emotional regulation, and solid academic performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, even <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17107450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this approach can misfire, especially if you\u2019re inconsistent<\/a>. When rules shift too often or warmth slips into over-involvement, the balance tips and the benefits fade.<\/p>\n<p>So check in with yourself:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Do I explain rules or just demand obedience?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do I keep limits firm yet flexible?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When I discipline, do I lead with support?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Baumrind highlights in her paper, this style is about leading with both backbone and heart. Do that, and you\u2019re not just raising a well-behaved, confident little human who knows they\u2019re loved.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-permissive\">Permissive<\/h3>\n<p>This way of parenting is also about warmth, nurturing, and affection. However, the difference between authoritarian vs. permissive is that the latter has very few boundaries, rules, and discipline.<\/p>\n<p>Permissive parents usually mean well. Some want to avoid the harsh discipline they grew up with, others blur the line between parent and friend, and many are simply too drained to enforce rules.<\/p>\n<p>In everyday life, it often looks like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Saying \u201cyes\u201d to avoid conflict.<\/li>\n<li>Letting kids set their own bedtime, meals, or routines.<\/li>\n<li>Acting more like a friend than a parent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you scroll through social media, the same pattern pops up with trendier labels, like helicopter, snowplow, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/lawnmower-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawnmower parents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s in a name? They all still have <em>Mean Girls<\/em>\u2019 Regina George\u2019s mom and <em>Modern Family<\/em>\u2019s Phil Dunphy written all over them.<\/p>\n<p>As those shows illustrate, the children often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/96944127\/The_Adverse_Influence_of_Permissive_Parenting_on_Personal_Growth_and_the_Mediating_Role_of_Emotional_Intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggle with self-control, boundaries, and authority outside the home<\/a>. They may be more impulsive and less persistent when challenges arise.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s easy to laugh at those TV parents, it\u2019s harder to notice how much of that shows up in your own home. Short of asking yourself if you\u2019re channeling Mrs. George (\u201c<em>I\u2019m not like a regular mom, I\u2019m a cool mom!<\/em>\u201d), you can reflect on questions like these:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Am I avoiding discipline just to keep the peace?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When my child pushes back, do I cave?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In the moment, do I care more about being liked than setting limits?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Dr. Shefali points out, children cannot handle unlimited freedom. And being permissive is a way to avoid being the parent your children need you to be.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-neglectful-uninvolved\">Neglectful (uninvolved)<\/h3>\n<p>We all know the story of Cinderella. Lady Tremaine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/stepparenting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stepparenting<\/a> methods are textbook neglectful.<\/p>\n<p>She provided food, yes. Shelter, yes. But she was also completely emotionally absent from her stepdaughter\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as no surprise that this is the most damaging of Baumrind\u2019s parenting styles. And it\u2019s not because of harshness, but because of things like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being physically present but emotionally checked out.<\/li>\n<li>Rarely knowing what your child is doing or who they\u2019re with.<\/li>\n<li>Offering little guidance, rules, or support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A student of Mindvalley\u2019s <em>Conscious Parenting Mastery <\/em>program, <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.mindvalley.com\/show\/conscious-parenting-mastery\/i-see-my-parenting-from-a-different-perspective\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rizaldy Valenzuela<\/a> from the U.S., used to pull something of a Lady Tremaine. Long-term, it can harm emotional health and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>But how do parents get this way? Often it\u2019s not intentional. Stress, burnout, or unresolved struggles can leave them feeling overwhelmed or too distracted to show up for their children.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you know if this pattern is creeping into your own parenting? How would you speak to them, and what would you do differently?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That shift is where <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/conscious-parenting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conscious parenting<\/a> begins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Many people think that conscious parenting is about never saying no to our kids<\/em>,\u201d Dr. Shefali explains. \u201c<em>It\u2019s not about that. It\u2019s really about attuning with the child. You know, what does the child need?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s how you can make the shift:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-pause-instead-of-project\">1. Pause instead of project<\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest blocks to real connection with your child is projection. That\u2019s when you take your feelings, anxieties, or expectations and unknowingly drop them on your child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We might say, \u2018Oh, my kid is so angry with me, and that&#8217;s why he\u2019s not looking at me right now<\/em>,\u2019\u201d says Dr. Shefali. The problem with that is, the more you project, the less space they have to figure out who <em>they<\/em> really are.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the <strong>conscious pause<\/strong> comes in. Instead of rushing in with your own storyline, stop for a beat. Ask yourself: Is this about my child\u2019s reality, or my own ego talking?<\/p>\n<p>That pause is powerful. It interrupts the habit of scripting their life, and when you practice this, you release your child from carrying your baggage. You stop casting them in your movie and let them be the stars of their own.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-practice-empathic-engagement\">2. Practice empathic engagement<\/h3>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing that can quietly sabotage the parent-child bond, it\u2019s hidden expectations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The moment we have an expectation of our children, especially if it\u2019s extra or heavy, they smell it immediately<\/em>,\u201d Dr. Shefali explains. \u201c<em>They know we want something from them, and then they automatically begin to withdraw from us<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She advises trading expectation for empathy. Instead of looking at your child through the lens of what you think they should be, practice meeting them where they are. That means:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name the expectation. <\/strong>Pause and ask:<em> What am I hoping for that reality isn\u2019t giving me?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reevaluate it.<\/strong> Is it even relevant, or is it a cultural script you\u2019re unconsciously running?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make the choice. <\/strong>Either adjust the expectation or adjust the situation, but don\u2019t stay stuck in the mismatch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you let go of the agenda in your head, you free up space in your heart. That\u2019s when you can truly see your child in their natural state.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-lead-with-compassion\">3. Lead with compassion<\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<em>We constantly judge our children<\/em>,\u201d Dr. Shefali points out. \u201c<em>We\u2019re always labeling them. Their actions is good or bad or positive or negative, as if someone has appointed us the judge and the jury, the wardens, the prisoners, and the persecutors<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The alternative to this? Compassion.<\/p>\n<p>When you lead with it, you step out of superiority and into humility. You stop seeing yourself as the judge of right and wrong and instead meet your child with understanding.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2227-9067\/12\/4\/465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">softens reactivity, expands tolerance, and builds the kind of trust that helps children feel safe<\/a> enough to grow into who they are meant to be.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-feel-your-feelings\">4. Feel your feelings<\/h3>\n<p>Raise your hand if you were ever taught to sit with your emotions. Not many of us, right? Most of us grew up being told to push them down, hide them, or get over them.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no surprise that when big feelings rise up, we react instead of respond\u2014snapping, yelling, or shutting down.<\/p>\n<p>But as Dr. Shefali highlights, feelings are not meant to be reacted to. \u201c<em>They\u2019re not meant to be shown to the whole world or emoted upon<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201c<em>They are meant to be done only one thing with: feel them<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next time your chest tightens or your jaw clenches, pause and name what\u2019s happening: \u201c<em>This is anger. This is stress. Let me feel it, not fling it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you do this, you break the cycle of reactivity.
