My parents, who both attended community college\u2014Dad a postal worker and Mom a secretary turned preschool aide\u2014believed a four-year degree would guarantee my brother and me better lives. They worked tirelessly, even running a lawn business on the side, to make that dream possible.<\/p>\n<p>I did what was expected: earned a bachelor\u2019s in English and built a career as a writer and editor while raising four kids. My brother, however, dropped out of college and started at the bottom as an insurance underwriter. Today, he\u2019s earning six figures and living comfortably\u2014without a degree.<\/p>\n<p>So, why the obsession with advanced degrees as the only route to success?
