It helps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2024\/12\/31\/some-blessings-to-begin-with\/\">bless what is<\/a> simply for being. It helps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2024\/12\/12\/thank-you-everything-icinori\/\">thank everything<\/a> for its unbidden everythingness. And still we need help \u2014 help holding on to the beauty amid the brutality, help stripping the armors of certainty to be complicated by contraction and more tenderly entire with one another, help seeing the variousness of the world more clearly in order to love it more deeply.<\/p>\n<p>The help of a lifetime comes from John Keene\u2019s poem \u201cBeatitude\u201d \u2014 a poem partway between mantra and manifesto, a protest in the form of prayer, a spell against indifference, broadening Amiri Baraka\u2019s instruction to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2017\/08\/24\/answers-in-progress-amiri-baraka\/\">\u201clove all things that make you strong\u201d<\/a> and deepening Leonard Cohen\u2019s instruction for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2024\/07\/18\/leonard-cohen-anger-resistance\/\">what to do with those who harm you<\/a>, carrying the torch Whitman lit when he urged us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2016\/05\/31\/walt-whitman-leaves-of-grass-preface\/\">\u201clove the earth and sun and the animals\u201d<\/a> and every atom of one another, all the while speaking in a voice entirely original yet sonorous with the universal in us. It is read here to the accompaniment of Zo\u00eb Keating\u2019s perfect <a href=\"https:\/\/zoekeating.bandcamp.com\/track\/optimist-2\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOptimist.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Beatitude&quot; by John Keene (read by Maria Popova)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QfxKo70K5GU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>BEATITUDE<\/strong><br \/><em>by John Keene<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Love everything<br \/>Love the sky and sea, trees and rivers,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mountains and abysses.<br \/>Love animals, and not just because you are one.<br \/>Love your parents and your children,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0even if you have none.<br \/>Love your spouse or partner,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0no matter what either word means to you.<br \/>Love until you create a cavern in your loving,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0until it seethes like a volcano.<br \/>Love everytime.<br \/>Love your enemies.<br \/>Love the enemies of your enemies.<br \/>Love those whose very idea of love is hate.<br \/>Love the liars and the fakes.<br \/>Love the tattletales and the hypercrits, the hucksters and the traitors.<br \/>Love the thieves because everyone has thought<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of stealing something at least once.<br \/>Love the rich who live only to empty<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0your purse or wallet.<br \/>Love the poverty of your empty coin purse or wallet.<br \/>Love your piss and sweat and shit.<br \/>Love your and others\u2019 chatter and its proof of the expansiveness<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of nothingness.<br \/>Love your shadows and their silent censure.<br \/>Love your fears, yesterday\u2019s and tomorrow\u2019s.<br \/>Love your yesterdays and tomorrows.<br \/>Love your beginning and your end.<br \/>Love the fact that your end is another beginning,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0or could be, for someone else.<br \/>Love yourself, but not too much<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0that you cannot love everything and everyone else.<br \/>Love everywhere.<br \/>Love in the absence of love.<br \/>Love the monsters breeding<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in every corner of the city and suburb,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all throughout the soil of the countryside.<br \/>Love the monster breeding inside you and slaughter him<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with love.<br \/>Love the shipwreck of your body, your mind\u2019s<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0salted garden.<br \/>Love love.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBeatitude\u201d comes from the elixir that is Keene\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Punks-Selected-Poems-Song-Cave\/dp\/1737277522\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Punks: New &amp; Selected Poems<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/search.worldcat.org\/title\/1285828252\" target=\"_blank\"><em>public library<\/em><\/a>).
