It was my mental framework.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After 22 years of studying human behavior, I discovered three distinctions that quietly change <em>everything<\/em> about how goals actually work.<\/p>\n<p>Not hustle hacks. Not productivity tricks. Not morning routines with ice baths and lion\u2019s mane.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just three simple shifts in how you <\/strong><strong><em>relate<\/em><\/strong><strong> to growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So as we step into 2026, I want to share <strong>three distinctions<\/strong> that completely changed how I approach goals, growth, and becoming who we\u2019re meant to be.<\/p>\n<p>Once you see them, you can\u2019t unsee them.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019d like to reveal these 3 insights to you as you begin your new year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-distinction-1-baseline-vs-peak\">Distinction #1: Baseline vs. Peak<\/h2>\n<p><em>(Why your best days are sabotaging your life)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the first mistake almost everyone makes with goals:<\/p>\n<p><strong>They design for their best days instead of their baseline.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most goals are set during moments of peak motivation:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Year\u2019s Eve<\/li>\n<li>After a powerful event<\/li>\n<li>Right after a bad week when you swear <em>\u201cnever again\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So you write goals that require peak performance:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ll work out six days a week.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em> \u201cI\u2019ll wake up at 5 a.m. every day.\u201d<\/em><em><br \/><\/em><em> \u201cI\u2019ll meditate for an hour every morning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then\u2026 life shows up.<\/p>\n<p>Stress. Travel. Kids. On most days? Zero minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because if I couldn\u2019t do the full hour, my mind said, <em>\u201cWhy bother?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When I shifted to baseline thinking, I changed my goal to <strong>15 minutes a day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>15 minutes was non-negotiable. On good days, I did more. On terrible days, I still did at least 15 mins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And something surprising happened.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-lesson-lowering-your-minimum-actually-raises-your-average\">The Lesson: Lowering your minimum actually raises your average.<\/h3>\n<p>When your baseline holds, you never \u201cfall off.\u201d You never restart. We\u2019re not lost.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why one phrase matters so much here:<\/p>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t need certainty.<\/strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><strong>You need a direction your body agrees with.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your body knows before your spreadsheet does.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contraction, heaviness, resistance? That\u2019s data.<\/li>\n<li>Grounded, energized, quietly \u201cyes\u201d? Also data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Direction is enough. Think of it like driving at night. Your headlights don\u2019t show the whole road, just enough to keep moving. And as you move, more of the road appears.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-lesson-don-t-ask-what-s-the-perfect-destination-ask-am-i-generally-moving-in-the-right-direction\">The Lesson: Don\u2019t ask: <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s the perfect destination?\u201d <\/em>Ask: <em>\u201cAm I generally moving in the right direction?\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s how momentum is born.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-distinction-3-correction-vs-self-judgment\">Distinction #3: Correction vs. Self-Judgment<\/h2>\n<p><em>(The difference between mastery and misery)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This may be the most important distinction of all.<\/p>\n<p>Because you <strong>will<\/strong> slip.<br \/>You <strong>will<\/strong> miss days.<br \/>You <strong>will<\/strong> drift.<\/p>\n<p>The question isn\u2019t <em>if<\/em> that happens.<\/p>\n<p>The question is: <strong>what do you do next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For most of my life, missing a goal triggered self-judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Not data. A verdict.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the irony:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-judgment doesn\u2019t motivate change. They\u2019re people who fail, notice, adjust, and continue\u2014faster than everyone else. Their secret isn\u2019t perfection. It\u2019s rapid, shame-free correction.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re people who:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notice quickly<\/li>\n<li>Adjust calmly<\/li>\n<li>Continue without drama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consistency isn\u2019t heroic. It\u2019s mechanical.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You missed a workout? That\u2019s not proof that you\u2019re lazy. It\u2019s data. What got in the way? What could you adjust? How might you make it easier next time?<\/p>\n<p>You broke your diet? That\u2019s not proof that you lack willpower. It\u2019s feedback. What was happening emotionally? What need were you trying to meet? How can you meet that need differently?<\/p>\n<p>Correction is clinical. Curious. Kind. It says: \u201cInteresting. Let me adjust and continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Self-judgment is emotional. Harsh. Final. It says: \u201cSee? I knew I couldn\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-lesson-when-you-fall-short-ask-what-can-i-learn-and-adjust-never-ask-what-s-wrong-with-me\">The Lesson: When you fall short, ask: <em>\u201cWhat can I learn and adjust?\u201d <\/em>Never ask: <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with me?\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Correction creates momentum.<br \/>Judgment creates quicksand.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-these-three-distinctions-add-up-to\">What These Three Distinctions Add Up To<\/h2>\n<p>Most people don\u2019t fail at goals because they lack motivation or intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>They fail because they\u2019re using the wrong mental models.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They design for <strong>peaks<\/strong> instead of baselines<\/li>\n<li>They demand <strong>perfection<\/strong> instead of direction<\/li>\n<li>They choose <strong>judgment<\/strong> instead of correction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shift these three distinctions, and everything changes.<\/p>\n<p>Not through force.
