Gradually, surreptitiously, the noise swells to a bellowing bass line, until it drowns out the symphony of life. <\/p>\n<p>It can last for days or months or entire seasons of being. It visited Keats frequently in his short life, leaving him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2019\/06\/13\/keats-depression\/\">with a mind empty of ideas and hands heavy as lead<\/a>. (Photograph from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Born-Run-Bruce-Springsteen\/dp\/1501141511\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Born to Run<\/em><\/a>.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his memoir, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Born-Run-Bruce-Springsteen\/dp\/1501141511\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Born to Run<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/born-to-run\/oclc\/1026404147&amp;referer=brief_results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>public library<\/em><\/a>), <strong>Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> writes about his father\u2019s \u201clong, drawn-out depressions,\u201d often so debilitating that he could not rise from bed for days, and about his own tumble toward the edge of the abyss quarried by his genetic inheritance and the darknesses of his childhood, and about what kept him from falling. \u201cGod help Bruce Springsteen when they decide he\u2019s no longer God,\u201d John Lennon reflected in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2022\/02\/16\/john-lennon-jonathan-cott-interview\/\">his most personal interview<\/a>, but no outside \u201cthey\u201d \u2014 no critic, no cry from the public \u2014 ever measures up to the inner chorus of anguish that most cruelly lowers an artist from the pedestal of their creative power and into the pit of depression. <\/p>\n<p>In a particularly vivid vignette from the period just before he finally sought help, Springsteen writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>My depression is spewing like an oil spill all over the beautiful turquoise-green gulf of my carefully planned and controlled existence. Its black sludge is threatening to smother every last living part of me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/11\/03\/bruce-springsteen-reading-list-favorite-books\/\">Springsteen\u2019s favorite books<\/a> reflect this lifelong undertone of black. But it is in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/9FNJXs9HzJhV6jZ4rMCKN3\/which-eight-songs-would-bruce-springsteen-take-to-a-desert-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC <em>Desert Island Discs<\/em><\/a> appearance that he opens up most candidly about his experience of depression and his life-honed coping mechanisms for it. (Photograph: BBC.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After noting that much of it is pure biochemistry, and can therefore be greatly salved by biochemical interventions, he considers the psychological skills that have helped him temper the onslaught and offers a Buddhist-like strategy of unresistant presence with the flow of experience on its own terms, laced with a gentle admonition against the trap of blamethirsty projection:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Just naming it [helps]\u2026 What most people tend to want to do is, when they feel bad, the first thing you want to do is to name a reason why you feel that way: \u201cI feel bad because\u2026\u201d and you\u2019ll transfer that to someone else \u201c\u2026because Johnny said this to me,\u201d or \u201cthis happened.\u201d And, sometimes, that\u2019s true. But a lot of times, you\u2019re simply looking to name something that\u2019s not particularly nameable and if you misname it, it just makes everything that much worse. <\/p>\n<p>So my \u201cskill\u201d is sort of saying, \u201cOkay, it\u2019s not this, it\u2019s not that \u2014 it\u2019s just <em>this<\/em>.
