The grass is perfect. Glasses clinking. That sweet, smoky smell of barbecue hanging in the Redmond air.<\/p>\n

Summer 1998. I\u2019m 22. Standing on the lawn of Bill Gates\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

The most powerful man in tech is right there \u2014 three feet away, flipping burgers, chatting with the other interns like it\u2019s just another Tuesday.<\/p>\n

I had worked my entire life for this moment. University of Michigan. Computer engineering. One of the most coveted internships on the planet.<\/p>\n

And I couldn\u2019t bring myself to shake his hand.<\/p>\n

Not nerves. Something deeper. A knowing I couldn\u2019t yet name.<\/p>\n

I had spent years walking toward a destination that was never mine. And standing on that perfect lawn \u2014 surrounded by every external signal of success \u2014 I felt like a fraud.<\/strong><\/p>\n
