Millions check Facebook multiple times per day. Others mindlessly scroll through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twitter.com\/craigballantyne\">Twitter<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our attention spans are shrinking and our productivity is cratering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We know this, and yet we can\u2019t escape the addiction, often justifying it with work demands or imaginary emergencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What excuse do you make for going to your phone first thing in the morning? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have to check my stats!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMust see who won the game!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJust need a quick peak at the news!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Digital distractions are killing your short-term productivity, and your long-term hopes and dreams are dying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019re behind on deadlines at work. Your sales are slumping because you have no time for strategic thinking. Your addictions prevent you from doing deep work; you\u2019re not making progress on important projects (like writing that book you\u2019ve dreamed of or drafting a business plan around your new big idea).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Things are even worse at home. Your spouse scowls because you\u2019re not fully present when you\u2019re with the family. You\u2019ve even become short-tempered with your kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is no way to win at the game of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s time I staged an intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The solution is simple and obvious: <\/span><span class=\"s1\">You need time away from your electronics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You need to stop letting the hum, flash, buzz, and tweet of your smartphone drive you mad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now I know what you\u2019re thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCraig, this all sounds great, but <i>how<\/i> do I get away from my phone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ll explain in a moment, but first, a damaging admission. The truth is that I struggle with distraction demons, too. That\u2019s why, since 2007, I\u2019ve been building a \u201cfence of rituals and routines\u201d to protect my brain from temptation. This system allows me to do deep work daily. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s how I write 1,500 words\u2014or more\u2014before 6 a.m. every day for my books and weekly newsletters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the best ways to build habits of steel like this is to harness the power of the Elon Musk method\u2014the very technique Elon Musk uses to generate his crazy ideas and to \u201cfigure out the tricky things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Elon Musk is always asking,<b> \u201cWhat are people accepting as a standard when there\u2019s room for significant improvement?\u201d <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That was my approach when figuring out how to become more productive and avoid the temptations of social media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, people just accept that you must always have access to the Internet. But you don\u2019t, and you shouldn\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s why, for 18 months, I cut access to the Internet at home. This \u201cextreme measure\u201d prevented me from going online and helped me build up my \u201cdigital distraction resistance.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each morning, I\u2019d wake up at 4 a.m., sit at my kitchen table, and write for two hours before eventually going to the office where I had access to the web. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many of those hours were uncomfortable, but the same is true of any new workout or project that requires discipline. You have to stick it out. How else do you expect to see results?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Nothing worth having comes without some kind of price.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fortunately, we can find ways to \u201chack\u201d the system and get results faster. That\u2019s where Musk\u2019s method comes in handy. Here is his three-step master plan:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>First, Elon Musk says, state the problem.<\/b> Let\u2019s say you want to fix your urge to \u201cscratch that social media itch\u201d immediately in the morning. I get it. For example, right now, at this very moment, I\u2019m trying to fight off a problem. You see, I\u2019ve written nearly half my daily word quota, and part of my brain wants to take a \u201cquick peek at Facebook.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Second, Musk says, gather evidence.<\/b> I call this getting \u201coutside eyes\u201d through external observation and introspection. It\u2019s always good to be self-aware\u2014to know your temptation triggers. But sometimes, it\u2019s hard to be conscious of behaviors that feed bad habits. That\u2019s why you need an external observer to point these out to you. Your combined observations are your evidence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">[When you work with me and my coaches, we\u2019ll teach you how to \u201cwatch the movie of your life\u201d\u2014in others words, how to see yourself in action with all of your good and bad habits in play. Knowing this will give you the opportunity to strengthen the good and eliminate the bad, making you<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>better every day.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Third, Musk says, develop a hypothesis based on \u201ccause and effect.\u201d<\/b> Identifying the relationship between stimulus and response in your life is a massive key to success. For me, I recognize that any moment when I struggle to come up with my next sentence, I instantly open a browser window and start to mess around\u2014or I pick up my phone and open the Instagram app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why? I need to feel I\u2019m moving forward (or at least not frustrated by stalling out), so I go to entertainment that will take my mind off the task at hand, or I look for evidence that I\u2019m not actually stalling out (affirmed by Instagram messages and post likes).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s why I\u2019ve trained myself to return to clear-cut goals and a set schedule. In this case, it\u2019s writing 1,500 words every morning. Why am I writing these words? To help my clients and build the ETR world. That\u2019s what drives me more than almost anything else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And so, I return to typing and before long, the ideas are streaming again. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A big part of my success here is having a plan in place. I know this is the structure of my mornings, so I don\u2019t have any moment when I\u2019m asking myself, \u201cWhat should I be doing?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because that\u2019s when distraction takes over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you get up with no plan in the morning, you probably have a 100% chance of going online. But if you prepare a detailed to-do list the night before (using the 3-step system I teach in my \u201cPerfect Day Formula\u201d), you introduce variable \u201cA\u201d and get result \u201cB\u201d\u2014greater productivity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s the Elon Musk Method for solving the Mark Zuckerberg Problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can apply the Musk method to overcoming any bad habit.
