We so readily forget that our vantage point is but a speck on the immense plane of possible perspectives. We so readily forget that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2018\/11\/01\/figuring\/\">there are infinitely many kinds of beautiful lives<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The discipline of countering our reflex for self-righteousness is a triumph of existential maturity \u2014 one increasingly rare in a culture where most people would rather armor themselves with judgment than tremble with uncertainty, would rather be right than understand.<\/p>\n<p>The pioneering psychologist and philosopher <strong>William James<\/strong> (January 11, 1842\u2013August 26, 1910) explores the making of that triumph in a pair of wonderful lectures \u2014 \u201cOn a Certain Blindness in Human Beings\u201d and \u201cWhat Makes Life Significant\u201d \u2014 posthumously collected in the 1911 volume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Talks-Teachers-Psychology-Students-Ideals\/dp\/1604501138\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Talks to Teachers on Psychology: And to Students on Some of Life\u2019s Ideals<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/worldcat.org\/title\/948878852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>public library<\/em><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/16287\/16287-h\/16287-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>public domain<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themarginalian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/williamjames.jpg?w=680&amp;is-pending-load=1#038;ssl=1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/data:image\/gif;base64,https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" class=\" jetpack-lazy-image\"\/><noscript><img data-lazy-fallback=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themarginalian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/williamjames.jpg?w=680&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">William James<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With an eye to \u201cthe price we inevitably have to pay for being practical creatures,\u201d James considers those rare moments when our habitual blinders fall away and we see a fuller picture of reality:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Only in some pitiful dreamer, some philosopher, poet, or romancer, or when the common practical man becomes a lover, does the hard externality give way, and a gleam of insight into the ejective world\u2026 the vast world of inner life beyond us, so different from that of outer seeming, illuminate our mind. Then the whole scheme of our customary values gets confounded, then our self is riven and its narrow interests fly to pieces, then a new centre and a new perspective must be found.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That new perspective includes the recognition that other people strive for happiness and meaning in ways other than our own, just as valid in the making of a life. James considers the value of this shift in understanding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It absolutely forbids us to be forward in pronouncing on the meaninglessness of forms of existence other than our own; and it commands us to tolerate, respect, and indulge those whom we see harmlessly interested and happy in their own ways, however unintelligible these may be to us. No one has insight into all the ideals. No one should presume to judge them off-hand.
