But here\u2019s the kicker: There isn\u2019t one.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the magic is in the grind\u2014the day-to-day commitment to those health goals. A <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11031-012-9333-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2012 study<\/a> published in <em>Motivation and Emotion<\/em> confirmed this. Its results found a positive association between goal setting and mental health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>So the question is, how do you set them?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>There are differences in how we set goals in an unconscious body and health transformation paradigm<\/em>,\u201d says Ronan, \u201c<em>and how we set goals in a way that is more conscious in this paradigm of \u2018me working with my body\u2019<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at both a little closer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unconscious-goal-setting\">Unconscious goal setting<\/h3>\n<p>You can go about it the traditional way by listing them, absolutely. You want to lose weight, you want to climb a mountain, and so on and so forth\u2014it\u2019s what Ronan calls \u201cunconscious goal setting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very straightforward. And you can use SMART goals for this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific.<\/strong> Your goals should be as specific and clear as possible.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measurable.<\/strong> Make them measurable, so you can track your progress.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Achievable.<\/strong> Make them bold enough to inspire your greatness, but realistic enough to keep you motivated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relevant. <\/strong>Fit them to your unique values and aspirations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-bound. <\/strong>Have a deadline of when you should achieve them by so you can prioritize the tasks to get you there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c<em>This works for a lot of people,<\/em>\u201d Ronan explains. However, the downside is that \u201c<em>it creates that unconscious relationship with the body<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conscious-goal-setting\">Conscious goal setting<\/h3>\n<p>Now, to the opposite side\u2014\u201cconscious goal setting.\u201d This is more about working on transforming the relationship you have with your body.<\/p>\n<p>It takes two things into account:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What is it that you want to do? <\/strong>This is the same as in the unconscious goal setting. It answers the things you want to experience as a human being\u2014be able to run a marathon, deadlift 200kgs, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>What does your body want to become?<\/strong> This is the second part of conscious goal setting. Here, it\u2019s all about your body\u2019s natural physique and it requires you to follow its cues so that it can reach its most optimal potential.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As any <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/holistic-health-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">holistic health coach<\/a>, like Ronan, knows, the ideal is the intersection between these two aspects\u2014or \u201cleader.\u201d It\u2019s kind of like a dance where you take what you want to do and tweak your plans according to what your body allows.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you want to be able to do the <em>sirsasana<\/em> (headstand) yoga pose.
