Curry was a mere 5\u20196\u201d his sophomore year of high school. It didn\u2019t help that he looked about 10 years old. And when he graduated high school, there wasn\u2019t a single college willing to give him a basketball scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A future in professional basketball seemed highly unlikely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But Curry was committed to landing in the NBA. So, he spent his basketball camps practicing before AND after every practice.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe most impressive thing that he did,\u201d Stein remembers, \u201cwas as soon as every workout was over, he would not leave the court until he swished five free throws in a row. Do you know how hard that is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat\u2019s the level of excellence he holds himself to. The moral of the story is that success is not an accident. Success is a choice. Steph Curry is one of the best shooters on the planet today because he made the choice to create great habits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019ve all heard stories like this.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Arnold Schwarzenegger trained in the dark of his army barracks (after \u201clights out\u201d to avoid detection) before his first bodybuilding competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Michael Jackson spent countless hours practicing his singing and dance moves as a child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Beyonce Knowles used to run laps while singing so she could build stage stamina to avoid exhaustion during shows.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These icons all built their success stories the same way\u2014by building discipline through good habits.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How? By using a technique called \u201chabit stacking,\u201d named by entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cathryn.lavery\/\">Cathryn Lavery<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As Lavery explains, the formula for habit stacking looks something like this: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Before\u00a0[CURRENT ACTIVITY\/HABIT], I will\u00a0[NEW ACTIVITY\/HABIT].<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>After [CURRENT ACTIVITY\/HABIT], I will\u00a0[NEW ACTIVITY\/HABIT].<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let\u2019s use Stephen Curry as an example. In his case, the habit-stacking formula would look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBefore\u00a0every team workout\u00a0(<i>current activity\/habit<\/i>), I will\u00a0take 150 shots (<i>new activity\/habit<\/i>).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter\u00a0every team workout\u00a0(<i>current activity\/habit<\/i>), I will shoot 5 free throws in a row before I can go shower (<i>new activity\/habit<\/i>).\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, you\u2019re not likely to be aiming for NBA recruitment, so let\u2019s take a look at some everyday habits that you might stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you brush your teeth (<i>current activity\/habit<\/i>), you can floss your teeth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">After you brush your teeth (<i>current activity\/habit<\/i>), you can drink two cups of water (<i>new activity\/habit<\/i>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s three good habits\u2014including two ones\u2014stacked on top of each other!<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let\u2019s take this a step further and apply habit stacking to your productivity, focus, and \u201cdeep work.\u201d Take a look at the habits below\u2014these are ones that that I\u2019ve taught for years. But if you\u2019re having trouble getting the habits to stick, stack them with other good habits to ensure your habit-building is stronger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here\u2019s what I mean: <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Limit phone time<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve written a lot about how your smartphone can sap your attention and hamper productivity. Even if people admit to this, they have a hard time separating themselves from their devices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If that sounds like you, try these techniques: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you get up in the morning, spend 15 minutes meditating (instead of checking email).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After you get up, take 30 minutes to exercise (instead of responding to emails).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you get ready for bed, set a \u201cdevice off\u201d alarm, reminding you to turn your phone off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After you get ready for bed, put your phone (still turned off) in a drawer outside of your bedroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Write for your business<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many of my clients are in the process of writing a book. Many others are keen on writing one to demonstrate authority in their field. If you have a writing project in the works but struggle to make time for it, then it\u2019s time to stack some habits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Try this:<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you drink your coffee (or eat breakfast), take 15 minutes and write 1,000 words for your book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After you drink your coffee (or eat breakfast), sketch out 2-3 ideas for your writing the following morning. Set these on a notepad next to your coffeemaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Be continually grateful<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The frenzy of entrepreneurship affects us all, but nothing kills the joy of building your own company than a mood without gratitude. Gratitude is key to building strong relationships and developing a community around your big idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you need to some help with that, try this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you get in the shower, write down (or think of) 3 materials things you\u2019re grateful for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After you shower, think of 3 people you\u2019re grateful for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Keep this going throughout your day, sparked by various good habits already ingrained in your daily routine. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Read more<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recently, I wrote about the incredible value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlytorise.com\/7-books-at-a-time\/\">reading 7 books at a time<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I know that sounds like a lot, but you don\u2019t have to commit to 7\u2014just 2-3 articles or books every day that expand your mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">First, decide what kind of content you want to read, then try this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you leave the house in the morning, set your chosen reading material on your computer keyboard at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After you get home (and before you jump on the computer), open your book\/article and read for 30 minutes. Be sure you keep your computer turned off!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">#<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I think you get the idea. None of the habits above are particularly sexy, but neither is shooting baskets for 30 minutes before every practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">No one will ever give you an award for getting to bed on time every night or finishing a book, but these are the habits that set you up for championship results in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Good habits done daily are what separate the best from the rest.
