If you want to inspire greatness in those around you, here are 15 guideposts to consider:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>See the goodness in others. <\/strong><\/span>Look for the spark of brilliance in everyone. Make people feel special and appreciated and inspire the greatness in them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Make people feel good about themselves.<\/strong><\/span> Be a cheerleader. Inspire them to <em>do<\/em> their best and to <em>be<\/em> their best. As Bill Walsh, the legendary football coach, said, \u201cThe four most powerful words are: I believe in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Be enthusiastic for other\u2019s achievements. <\/strong><\/span>Someone\u2019s good fortune is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/are-you-enthusiastic-for-the-success-of-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not your misfortune<\/a>. The only limitations on what you can achieve are the constraints that you place on yourself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Encourage personal responsibility.<\/strong><\/span> Don\u2019t make people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/are-you-helping-or-hurting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dependent<\/a> on you. Demonstrate your confidence by encouraging folks to think for themselves, make their own decisions, and own their lives.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Be an exemplary role model.<\/strong><\/span> You can lecture people until you\u2019re blue in the face, but the best way to teach someone is to\u00a0<em>show, <\/em>not<em> tell<\/em>. Words express what\u2019s on your mind, but your actions say what\u2019s in your heart.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Help people grow.<\/strong><\/span> Criticism is a hostile substitute for constructive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/how-do-you-react-to-negative-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feedback<\/a>. Praise in public; present shortcomings in private. Make observations impersonal. Focus on the act, not the person.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Tell it like it is.<\/strong><\/span> Be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/let-me-give-it-to-you-straight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">straight with people<\/a> \u2014 even if the message hurts. If you think protecting someone\u2019s feelings is in their best interest, think again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Set high expectations. <\/strong><\/span>Challenge people to leave their comfort zone, set stretch goals, and reach for the sky.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Promote positive change.<\/strong><\/span> Build the type of relationship in which you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/what-works-better-obedience-or-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>encourage<\/em> change<\/a> rather than\u00a0<em>demand\u00a0<\/em>it. People change\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0when change is their choice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Boost self-confidence.<\/strong><\/span> Provide encouragement when people second-guess themselves or question their capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Encourage self-reliance.<\/strong><\/span> Exhibit trust rather than control. There\u2019s no need to force people into compliance; if you play your cards right, they\u2019ll manage themselves.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Remain open-minded.<\/strong><\/span> Respect others\u2019 opinions \u2014 even if you disagree. True friends hotly debate issues and walk away as friends.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Be tolerant.<\/strong><\/span> Don\u2019t judge people for their beliefs or force your values on them. We can\u2019t expect others to abandon their values any more than we would forsake our own.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Demonstrate your loyalty.<\/strong><\/span> Be available in good times and bad.
