And yet where would the world be if each generation didn\u2019t plank its crossing with the life-tested wisdom of its elders? (Photograph: Christopher Michel)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hovering between the practical and the poetic, his learnings are sometimes seemingly obvious reminders of what we know but habitually forget, sometimes pleasingly contrarian, always unselfconsciously sincere. What emerges is a shorthand manual for living with kindness, decency, and generosity of spirit. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some I loved and shall try to live by.<\/p>\n<p>In a fine complement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2021\/10\/10\/thich-nhat-hanh-listening-love\/\">the Buddhist practice of deep listening<\/a>, he offers:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Listening well is a superpower. While listening to someone you love keep asking them \u201cIs there more?\u201d until there is no more.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Affirming poet and philosopher David Whyte\u2019s observation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2015\/05\/15\/david-whyte-consolations-anger-forgiveness-maturity\/\">\u201cto forgive is to assume a larger identity than the person who was first hurt,\u201d<\/a> he reframes the object of forgiveness:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When you forgive others they may not notice but you will heal. Forgiveness is not something we do for others; it is a gift to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness is accepting the apology you will never get.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inverting the equation and echoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2022\/10\/24\/repentance-repair-ruttenberg\/\">Maimonedes\u2019s wisdom on repentance and repair<\/a>, he maps the noblest path to seeking forgiveness when you yourself have erred:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>How to apologize: quickly, specifically, sincerely. Don\u2019t ruin an apology with an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>A proper apology consists of conveying the 3 Rs: regret (genuine empathy with the other) responsibility (not blaming someone else) and remedy (your willingness to fix it).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In consonance with George Saunders\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/04\/28\/george-saunders-on-kindness-animated\/\">moving reflection on his greatest regret<\/a>, Kelly urges:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Whenever you have a choice between being right or being kind be kind. No exceptions. Don\u2019t confuse kindness with weakness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a kindred sentiment that would have pleased Simone Weil, who exhorts us across the epochs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2015\/04\/07\/simone-weil-notebooks\/\">\u201cnever react to an evil in such a way as to augment it,\u201d<\/a> he adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Anger is not the proper response to anger. When you see someone angry you are seeing their pain. Hoffmann\u2019s <em>Nutcracker<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A century and a half after Thoreau made his lyrical case for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2012\/07\/12\/thoreau-on-success\/\">defining your own success<\/a>, Kelly \u2014 whose own illustirous life is a testament to this \u2014 writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Don\u2019t measure your life with someone else\u2019s ruler.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>The greatest killer of happiness is comparison. If you must compare, compare yourself to you yesterday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Echoing William James\u2019s insistence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2012\/09\/25\/william-james-on-habit\/\">habit is how \u201cwe are spinning our own fates,\u201d<\/a> Kelly writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Habit is far more dependable than inspiration. Make progress by making habits. Don\u2019t focus on getting into shape. Focus on becoming the kind of person who never misses a workout.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of a habit is to remove that action from self-negotiation. You no longer expend energy deciding whether to do it. You just do it. Good habits can range from telling the truth to flossing.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>Keep showing up. 99% of success is just showing up. Nobody talks about the departed\u2019s achievements. The only thing people will remember is what kind of person you were while you were achieving.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. Hang out with, and learn from people smarter than yourself. Even better, find smart people who will disagree with you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Promptness is a sign of respect.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Your passions should fit you exactly but your purpose in life should exceed you. Work for something much larger than yourself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Bad things can happen fast but almost all good things happen slowly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The best work ethic requires a good rest ethic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Criticize in private, praise in public.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You will thrive more \u2014 and so will others \u2014 when you promote what you love rather than bash what you hate.
