If someone presents an Obliger with an expectation, by definition, an Obliger feels the weight of that request\u2014because the definition of an Obliger is \u201cMeets outer expectations, resists inner expectations.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Obligers often make observations about themselves such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI struggle to set boundaries\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI always go the extra mile, and people take advantage of that\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI keep my promises to other people, but I have trouble keeping my promises to myself\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not good at self-care\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>This pattern can lead to burnout, feelings of resentment, or even \u201c<a href=\"\/articles\/identifying-obliger-rebellion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obliger-rebellion<\/a>.\u201d Saying \u201cno\u201d to someone else\u2019s expectation is an important skill to help you achieve your aims and focus on what\u2019s important to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But it\u2019s usually not as simple as \u201cjust saying no,\u201d especially when someone else\u2019s request or demand weighs heavily on you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you face this challenge, you might\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Say \u201cyes\u201d with conditions:<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCan I start this project next week when I can give it more attention?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m going to finish writing these emails first, then I\u2019ll draft that caption for you if I have time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you\u2019d like me to do this report, what else can come off my to-do list?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCan you finish putting the groceries away for me while I make you that snack?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can play with you for 20 minutes, and then I have to get back to work until lunchtime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delegate:<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m not the best person for this task right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis person also knows how to do this and may have more bandwidth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhy don\u2019t you try it on your own first and I\u2019ll check in with you when you\u2019re done?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Say \u201cno\u201d so you can say \u201cyes\u201d to someone else:<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can\u2019t stay late tonight, I have dinner plans with a friend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I take on this project, I\u2019m going to risk missing an important deadline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can\u2019t come out tonight, I promised myself an evening at home to rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m taking a week off to spend time with my family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider your duty as a role model, or to your future-self:<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I get burnt out, I won\u2019t be helpful to anyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I stay late, my teammates might feel like they have to stay late too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want my kids to see what healthy boundaries look like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I get a good night\u2019s sleep, I\u2019ll be more productive tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Upholders, Questioners, and Rebels are often unhelpful when Obligers say they feel overwhelmed by the weight of expectations. Those Tendencies say things like, \u201cIf you don\u2019t want to do it, well, don\u2019t do it,\u201d \u201cIf you get clear on what\u2019s important to you, then you\u2019ll do it,\u201d \u201cSet a rule for yourself and stick to it,\u201d or \u201cJust it ignore what they say.\u201d That advice doesn\u2019t work well for Obligers.<\/p>\n<p>For an approach to resonate with someone, it has to reflect the perspective of their Tendency.
