People make promises at the drop of a hat: Politicians promise a better future, job applicants promise they\u2019ll take the world by storm, and people like you and me promise to invest in our personal growth, take better care of ourselves, and even cut back on desserts. (Oh no!) When all is said and done, do you keep your promises? It\u2019s so easy to tell folks what you plan to do. It\u2019s so easy to promise how hard you\u2019ll work and how much you\u2019ll try. It\u2019s so easy to brag about how you\u2019ll do <\/em>your best and be<\/em> your best. That\u2019s because promises like that require no effort \u2014 they\u2019re just words.<\/p>\n

The truth is, after those statements are made, the hard work<\/a> begins \u2014 delivering on your promise. But as soon as some folks realize that it\u2019ll take hard work, sacrifice, and determination, they run for the hills. In short, some people have every intention of keeping their promise\u2026others, not so much.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t tell me what you\u2019re going to do. Tell me what you\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n

Deeds Not Words<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The problem is that people are often rewarded for intentions even though they only offered wishful thinking. While intentions may offer gratification, at some point the bill will come due. If promises aren\u2019t kept, questions will arise \u2014 and the emperor will appear with no clothes. At that point, don\u2019t be surprised if people look over your shoulder, second-guess your decisions, and question your motives. After all, you earned it.<\/p>\n

Good intentions are meaningless if you don\u2019t deliver on your promise.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s important enough to make a promise, it should be important enough to keep it. When you make the following statements, are they throwaway lines?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe treat everyone with dignity and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe stand by our products.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can always count on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe put people before profits.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll always be honest<\/a> with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s critical to be open-minded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all about giving back to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur customers come first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll always be there for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe care.\u201d<\/p>\n

When All Is Said and Done<\/h3>\n

When people make a promise, they choose one of two paths. Some folks use a promise as a motivator. \u201cNow that I made the promise, I have to keep it.\u201d Other people make a promise to look good. The problem is that they have no intention of keeping it. Those folks think they\u2019re fooling the world but they\u2019re only kidding themselves.<\/p>\n

You see, every time you break a promise, you\u2019re telling yourself that going back on your word<\/a> is acceptable. By doing so, you make it easier to renege on your promise next time. Over time, what starts out as a dishonorable act ends up being a defining characteristic. Everyone will know that your statements are worthless. What\u2019s more, you\u2019ll know<\/em> you\u2019ve become a fraud, which will do wonders for your self-esteem. If you want to be taken seriously, take your promises to heart. Every time you make a commitment, your moral character<\/a> is on full display, you\u2019re revealing how much your promise is worth, and you\u2019re signaling whether you can be trusted. When you make a promise, you\u2019re not giving your word in erasable pencil, you\u2019re inscribing your commitment in indelible ink. As Pablo Picasso, the painter and sculptor, said, \u201cWhat one does is what counts. Not what one had the intention of doing.\u201d In short, deeds not words.<\/p>\n

When all is said and done, real winners have a proven track record of success. They don\u2019t just talk a good game. They deliver on their promises. Don\u2019t tell me what you\u2019re going to do. Tell me what you\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n
