I\u2019ve found that it\u2019s very, very helpful to keep this future-self in mind.<\/p>\n<p>I stick to tasks and habits that I\u2019d rather avoid in the <em>present<\/em>, because I\u2019m mindful of how they\u2019ll pay off in the <em>future<\/em>: \u201cMy future-self won\u2019t want dental work, so I\u2019d better floss now.\u201d (As the old saying goes, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to take care of all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep.\u201d) \u201cMy future-self will be so happy if I take photos every day on this trip, I\u2019ll remember all our adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this way, thinking of future-Gretchen makes my life happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of my <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/four-tendencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Tendencies personality framework<\/a>, the thinking of the future-self is a tool that\u2019s useful for all four Tendencies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you can create accountability for any aim, without needing anyone else\u2019s cooperation\u2014particularly useful for <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/ron-lieber-obliger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obligers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>you remind yourself of the good or bad consequences that will follow from your actions or inactions\u2014particularly useful for <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/carla-hall-rebel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rebels<\/a><\/li>\n<li>you remind yourself of the reasons that you\u2019re doing something\u2014particularly useful for <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/jordan-harbinger-questioner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Questioners<\/a><\/li>\n<li>you remind yourself of the pain of letting yourself down or the satisfaction of accomplishment\u2014particularly useful for <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/ramit-sethi-upholder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upholders<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When deciding how to spend our time, energy, or money, thinking of our future-selves can help us to avoid feelings of <em>regret<\/em> and set ourselves up for feelings of <em>satisfaction<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Regret<\/h4>\n<p>I can reflect on what regrets future-Gretchen may feel. <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/440-very-special-episode-we-talk-about-regret-our-own-regrets-and-listeners-regrets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regret<\/a>\u00a0is an unpleasant emotion, but it\u2019s helpful: because it\u2019s so unpleasant, I want to do the things that will mean I won\u2019t suffer it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If I don\u2019t exercise now, future-Gretchen will regret it, because she\u2019ll be frail.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t get my shingles vaccine now, future-Gretchen could get a terrible case of shingles.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t wear my seat belt now, future-Gretchen could get seriously injured in a car accident that otherwise wouldn\u2019t be very serious.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t stay in close touch with my high-school friends now, future-Gretchen will feel lonelier.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t take the trouble to upgrade my laptop now, future-Gretchen may have to deal with a crash.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t make an effort to read widely now, future-Gretchen\u2019s ideas will start to feel stale.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t make an effort to give myself recess everyday, future-Gretchen may start to feel drained and overwhelmed.<\/li>\n<li>If I don\u2019t buy plane tickets early, future-Gretchen will pay more and have fewer choices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of my <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/getting-started-23-for-2023-trifecta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>23 for 2023 Trifecta<\/strong><\/a>, I made a list of 23 things that I want to accomplish in 2023. Future-Gretchen will feel a lot of regret if I don\u2019t get a lot of those things done by December 31; they\u2019re important to me. We can ask, \u201cWill my future-self care if I do this\u2014or not?\u201d If future-Gretchen won\u2019t feel any regret, probably now-Gretchen doesn\u2019t need to worry about it.<\/p>\n<p>Another strategy for using the regrets of our future-self to make ourselves happier? <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2007\/09\/performing-a-project-premortem\">Conduct a pre-mortem<\/a>. Imagine yourself in the future: You\u2019ve failed to achieve an important aim. What went wrong? Why did you fail? What will your future-self wish that your now-self had done differently? <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/131-do-10-jumping-jacks\/\">I\u2019ve done pre-mortems several times<\/a>, and they\u2019ve always helped me to take action in the present.<\/p>\n<h4>Satisfaction<\/h4>\n<p>The flip-side of regret is satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>I can also remind myself of how gratified future-Gretchen will feel with what now-Gretchen has done.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to focus on the \u201cto-do,\u201d and it can be energizing to remind ourselves instead of the \u201cta-da\u201d\u2014how great our future-self will feel when we look back on how far we\u2019ve come.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If I read twenty minutes each day now, future-Gretchen will finish many books by the end of the year, which feeds my creativity.<\/li>\n<li>If I take the time to clean out my office now, future-Gretchen will feel calmer and spend less time looking for misplaced items.<\/li>\n<li>If I follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/go-outside-23-in-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGo Outside 23 in \u201923\u201d challenge<\/a>, future-Gretchen will consistently spend time in nature this year, a source of energy and happiness.<\/li>\n<li>If I make lots of lunch plans now, future-Gretchen will feel more connected to old friends and have new friends.<\/li>\n<li>If I do a weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/6-try-power-hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Power Hour<\/a>, future-Gretchen will feel the relief and satisfaction of crossing dreaded tasks off the list.<\/li>\n<li>If I keep a running list of gift ideas throughout the year, future-Gretchen will find gift-buying easy and fun at holiday time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An interesting twist on using a \u201cta-da\u201d approach to the future self? <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/write-a-letter-of-congratulations-to-your-future-post-homebound-self\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Write a letter of congratulations to your future-self<\/a>, in which you praise future-you for all the specific steps successfully done to achieve a difficult aim.\u00a0 Visualizing the satisfaction of the victorious finish line may give you energy to persist\u2014and to identify, with anticipatory hindsight (oxymoron alert!), the steps you took to achieve it.<\/p>\n<p>How do you invoke your future-self to help your present-self to get things done?
