a self-conception distorted by an ego that habitually confuses who we wish we were for who we are, redeemed only by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2023\/09\/12\/virginia-woolf-soul\/\">the courage to know ourselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A generation after Maya Angelou captured these flickering contradictions in her poem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2018\/05\/09\/a-brave-and-startling-truth-maya-angelou\/\">\u201cA Brave and Starling Truth,\u201d<\/a> which sailed into space to remind us that \u201cwe are neither devils nor divines,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/tag\/jane-hirshfield\/\">Jane Hirshfield<\/a> cracks open this eternal question of what it means to be a person in a lovely poem from her collection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Asking-New-Selected-Poems\/dp\/0593535952\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Asking: New and Selected Poems<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/worldcat.org\/title\/1350965665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>public library<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;To Be a Person&quot;
