Others measure the depth of their friendships, knowing that relationships are the real treasure in life. The bottom line is, don\u2019t<em> count your friends<\/em> \u2014 <em>count on them<\/em>. While the number of friends may feed your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/is-your-confidence-turning-into-egotism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ego<\/a>, it will never satisfy your heart. Good friends place a high value on their relationships and actively invest in their friendships.<\/p>\n<h3>Are You a Good Friend?<\/h3>\n<p>As you examine the following list, ask yourself whether these traits apply to your friendships:<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You bring out the best in your friend and make him feel good about himself.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You\u2019re delighted for your friend\u2019s happiness and never envious of her success.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You put your friend\u2019s needs ahead of your own and know that your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/what-does-it-take-to-show-a-little-kindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kindness<\/a> will be reciprocated one day. But you never keep score. Your joy comes from giving.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You\u2019re willing to do anything for your friend \u2014 even when it\u2019s inconvenient.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>If your friend needs something, you jump right in, but you know when to back off and never force your will on him.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You make your friend feel at ease \u2014 no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franksonnenbergonline.com\/blog\/you-be-the-judge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judging<\/a>. Your friend can be herself with no need to put on a show.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You\u2019re happy just to be in your friend\u2019s company. You don\u2019t need to be entertained to have a good time.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You\u2019re comfortable sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with your friend.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You\u2019re also good at being a sounding board \u2014 being all ears if required.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You don\u2019t sugarcoat bad news. You tell it like it is \u2014 even if it hurts.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your friend\u2019s behavior is so reliable and consistent, you can predict his words and actions. That strengthens trust between you.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You know your friend like the back of your hand. In fact, you know each other so well, it feels like you can communicate without talking.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Even though you and your friend don\u2019t always see eye-to-eye, you respect your friend\u2019s opinions. True friends fiercely debate issues and still walk away as friends.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You have total faith in your friend. You watch her back \u2014 in good times and bad \u2014 and never have to second-guess her motives.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Time and distance have little if any bearing on your relationship. You can be separated from each other and then pick up right where you left off.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You are very protective of your relationship. You\u2019d never take your friendship for granted or do anything to jeopardize it.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Last, but not least, you share common <em>interests<\/em> and values. Principles form the heart of every successful relationship and can ultimately determine its success.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treat your friendships like a valuable treasure.
