So I keep a list of nagging tasks that I\u2019ve been putting off, and once a week, for one hour, I \u201cpower\u201d through them.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s surprising how much I can get done in just one hour.<\/p>\n<p>We talked about \u201c<strong>Power Hour<\/strong>\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/6-try-power-hour\/\">episode 6<\/a> of the <em>Happier<\/em> podcast, and in later <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/6-try-power-hour\/\">episode 277<\/a>, we talked about a twist to the idea, with \u201c<strong>Empower Hour<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scheduling an \u201cEmpower Hour\u201d is a way to make time and hold ourselves accountable for putting our values into the world.<\/p>\n<p>One hour might not sound like much, but it\u2019s manageable and realistic, and it\u2019s surprising how much a person can get done in one Empower Hour\u2014especially if they do it week after week.<\/p>\n<p>You might use an Empower Hour to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Register to vote<\/li>\n<li>Contact representatives about issues that are important to you<\/li>\n<li>Do research on organizations or policies\u2014and share what you\u2019ve learned with others<\/li>\n<li>Sort through your possessions to identify things to donate<\/li>\n<li>Take those items to the donation place or arrange for their pick-up<\/li>\n<li>Donate time (volunteer at an animal shelter, serve at a food bank, clean up a park or beach, help out at your local library)<\/li>\n<li>Donate skills (writing, graphic design, web development, carpentry, tutoring, fundraising, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Donate money to a cause or organization you support<\/li>\n<li>Collect and share resources or supplies<\/li>\n<li>Mentor someone<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/281-start-a-social-issues-book-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Start a social-issues book club<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Write letters, essays, or op-eds<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.organdonor.gov\/sign-up\">Sign up to be an organ donor<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Figure out ways to cut down on food waste<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer to send postcards or texts to encourage others to register to vote<\/li>\n<li>Donate blood<\/li>\n<li>Read a book or watch a documentary to educate yourself about an important issue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/the-eight-splendid-truths-of-happiness\/\"><strong>First Splendid Truth of Happiness<\/strong><\/a> is: To be happier, we must think about <em>feeling good, feeling bad,<\/em> and <em>feeling right<\/em>, in an <em>atmosphere of growth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That third element, \u201c<strong>feeling right<\/strong>,\u201d is about our values. We\u2019re happier when we feel that we\u2019re doing the right things, that we\u2019re living up to our aims for ourselves, that we\u2019re putting our values into the world.<\/p>\n<p>In the tumult of everyday life, with all its claims on our time, energy, and money, sometimes it\u2019s hard to identify and follow through on the efforts that will make us \u201cfeel right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For many of us, putting something on the calendar makes it much more likely to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Note: The scheduling approach often doesn\u2019t work well for <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/four-tendencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rebels<\/a>, who tend to resist adding items to their calendar. To achieve the same result, Rebels can remind themselves, \u201cThis activity is the way I choose to put my values into the world.
