If you don\u2019t live<br \/>near a lake, you\u2019ll have to travel.<br \/>Walking is best and shows you mean it,<br \/>but you could take a train and let yourself<br \/>be soothed by the rocking<br \/>on the rails. It\u2019s permitted<br \/>to receive solace for whatever you did<br \/>or didn\u2019t do, pitiful, beautiful<br \/>human. When my mother was in the hospital,<br \/>my daughter and I had to clear out the home<br \/>she wouldn\u2019t return to. Then she recovered<br \/>and asked, incredulous,<br \/><em>How could you have thrown out all my shoes?<\/em><br \/>So you\u2019ll need a boat. You could rent or buy,<br \/>but, for the sake of repairing the world,<br \/>build your own. Thin strips<br \/>of Western red cedar are perfect,<br \/>but don\u2019t cut a tree. There\u2019ll be<br \/>a demolished barn or downed trunk<br \/>if you venture further.<br \/>And someone will have a mill.<br \/>And someone will loan you tools.<br \/>The perfume of sawdust and the curls<br \/>that fall from your plane<br \/>will sweeten the hours. Each night<br \/>we dream thirty-six billion dreams. In one night<br \/>we could dream back everything lost.<br \/>So grill the pale flesh.<br \/>Unharness yourself from your weary stories.<br \/>Then carry the oily, succulent fish to the one you hurt.<br \/>There is much to fear as a creature<br \/>caught in time, but this<br \/>is safe. You need no defense.
