It\u2019s only natural to put your life, your career, and the well-being of your family first. But do you think your job is done when you<\/em> get what you want, or do you feel any obligation to others? For example, do you have a responsibility to lift others up, share your good fortune, or leave a better world for the next generation? Face the facts\u2026that\u2019s your responsibility too.<\/p>\n

Imagine the world we would have if everyone focused on their own needs, thinking, \u201cAs long as I benefit, who cares what happens to others,\u201d or \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what happens in the future as long as I get what I want today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some folks are so busy stuffing their face that they don\u2019t see their neighbor starving.<\/p>\n

Recognize Your Role<\/h3>\n

You are responsible for you. But that\u2019s not where your responsibility ends.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it. We live in an interconnected world, but we frequently make decisions that solely benefit ourselves. The problem with that line of reasoning is that unless you live on a deserted island, other people\u2019s wellbeing has a direct impact on you.<\/p>\n

When one part of your body is hurt, you hurt all over.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s critical to consider how your actions affect others. That doesn\u2019t require you to relinquish something or forgo your independence, but it\u2019s important to consider yourself part of a vast web of humanity.<\/p>\n

One day you will measure success not by what you\u2019ve accumulated,
but by what you\u2019ve given back.<\/p>\n

Here are 20 common ways people regularly shirk their responsibility:<\/p>\n

Own your life. <\/strong><\/span>Asking for help<\/a> is fine but be careful it doesn\u2019t become an addiction.<\/p>\n

Set high standards.<\/span> <\/strong>Virtue<\/a> isn\u2019t demanding more of others; it\u2019s expecting more of yourself.<\/p>\n

Invest in your future.<\/strong><\/span> Don\u2019t forgo your long-term dreams to satisfy your short-term desires.<\/p>\n

Run toward problems.<\/strong><\/span> Address problems head-on rather than kicking the can down the road.<\/p>\n

Teach someone the ropes.<\/strong><\/span> Show people how<\/em> to do something rather than doing it for them<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Nurture future leaders. <\/strong><\/span>As you climb your ladder of success, reach down and pull others along with you.<\/p>\n

Discipline your children.<\/strong><\/span> Let\u2019s face it. Having kids is not the same as being a parent. Raise your children to have strong moral principles and to be productive members of society.<\/p>\n

Pass on your values. <\/strong><\/span>Behind all good kids are parents or caregivers who understand the importance of raising them that way.<\/p>\n

Raise your kids to be independent. <\/strong><\/span>Give your children wings. As Jean Wade Rindlaub, the advertising executive, said, \u201cTwo of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings.\u201d Roots to know that they\u2019re always welcome home and wings to set them free.<\/p>\n

Be compassionate.<\/strong><\/span> Help people get back on their feet. But don\u2019t make them dependent<\/a> on your good graces.<\/p>\n

Stand up for what\u2019s right.<\/span> <\/strong>There\u2019s a huge difference between right and wrong<\/a>. And it\u2019s the job of decent, law-abiding citizens to point out that reality to those who have forgotten.<\/p>\n

Be civil on social media.<\/strong><\/span> Some people hit with fists, others with words.<\/p>\n

Earn your rewards. <\/strong><\/span>Carry your weight rather than expecting others to bear the burden.<\/p>\n

Hold people accountable. <\/strong><\/span>If you don\u2019t address poor behavior, you\u2019re encouraging<\/em> it through inaction.<\/p>\n

Think for yourself.<\/strong><\/span> The right answer isn\u2019t always determined by the number of people who say or believe something, but rather by the\u00a0one<\/em> who has the courage and conviction to question conventional wisdom.<\/p>\n

Train your replacement. <\/strong><\/span>As soon as you assume a new role at work, it\u2019s your responsibility to identify and train your replacement.<\/p>\n

Manage for the long-term. <\/strong><\/span>Even though you may be compensated based on short-term performance, you have a responsibility to invest for the future. As Robert Louis Stevenson, the novelist, said, \u201cDon\u2019t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Listen to your conscience. <\/strong><\/span>Do what\u2019s right, not what\u2019s easy.<\/p>\n

Lead by example. <\/strong><\/span>Words express what\u2019s on your mind, but your actions say what\u2019s in your heart.<\/p>\n

Create a legacy. <\/strong><\/span>Make every effort to leave a better world for the next generation.<\/p>\n

Be a Force for Good<\/h3>\n

Even though the world is large, one person can still make a difference, and that person is you<\/em>. Be a force for good, focus on the needs of others, and stand up for what\u2019s right \u2014 even if you\u2019re the lone voice. Let\u2019s face it: Accepting responsibility is the first step toward positive change. As President Abraham Lincoln said, \u201cYou cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.\u201d<\/p>\n
