It\u2019s easier to change our environment than to change ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Self-knowledge is especially useful when we\u2019re trying to make progress on our aims\u2014so we can set ourselves up for success.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a useful question: <strong>When you do something right, what type of gold star do you appreciate most?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Different types of rewards and recognition work for different people.<\/p>\n<p>This matters, because feelings of recognition and accomplishment help us to continue to strive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s gratifying to reflect on the progress we\u2019ve made.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s gratifying to have others recognize our efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we\u2019re always thinking about our <em>to-do<\/em> list, we can feel discouraged and overwhelmed. If we take a moment to revel in our <em>ta-da<\/em> list, we get the energy to keep going.<\/p>\n<p>But people differ in the kinds of gold stars that work for them.<\/p>\n<p>When you identify what gratifies you the most, you can set yourself up to get it.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve made progress on an aim, what form of gold stars gratifies you most?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Praise-seeker: <\/strong>If you\u2019re a fan of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/5lovelanguages.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Five Love Languages<\/a>,\u201d you know about \u201cWords of Affirmation\u201d (which is my personal love language)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Badge-accumulator: <\/strong>You seek outward recognition of mastery, such as a job title, a certificate, a diploma, a publication<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trophy-hunter:<\/strong> You want an actual gold star, a physical trophy, Scout badges, a medal, a deal toy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chain-Builder: <\/strong>You get satisfaction from seeing your streak get longer as you \u201cdon\u2019t break the chain\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keepsake-collector:<\/strong> You collect a keepsake from something you\u2019ve crossed off the list, such as keeping a playbill from every play you attend or a matchbook from every restaurant where you ate on vacation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Likes-gatherer: <\/strong>You want engagement on social media<\/li>\n<li><strong>Party-planner: <\/strong>You love to celebrate with a social event, celebratory dinner, party<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pat-on-the-backer: <\/strong>You enjoy a literal pat on the back, handshake, fist bump, high-five<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rewards-taker: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/podcast\/podcast-episode-63-the-problem-of-passwords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rewards are very, very tricky<\/a>! For instance, if I know my child is a <strong>Trophy-Hunter<\/strong>, I could make some kind of \u201ctrophy\u201d to award \u201cGreat positive attitude during a vacation when he got sick and couldn\u2019t do anything fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What category of \u201cgold star\u201d works for you?
