For 2023, we\u2019ve talked about joining the yearly challenge (<a href=\"https:\/\/thehappierapp.com\/outside-23-in-23?utm_campaign=article-23-for-2024&amp;utm_source=gr&amp;utm_medium=web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Outside23in23<\/a>), identifying a <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/articles\/one-word-themes-for-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-word theme<\/a>\u00a0for 2023, and making a \u201c23 for 2023\u201d list.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that when we set specific aims for ourselves, no surprise, we\u2019re more likely to achieve them. So taking the time to make this list can make a big difference to our happiness.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we\u2019ve seen the creative ways that people approach these lists.<\/p>\n<h3>How to make your 23 for 2023 list:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the number 23 in a creative way, such as \u201cTry 23 new recipes\u201d or as Elizabeth notes, \u201cRead 23 novels\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Divide the list into categories, such as \u201cFamily,\u201d \u201cCareer,\u201d \u201cAdventure\u201d \u201cFun\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Build the entire list around a single important aim, such as \u201cMove\u201d or \u201cSwitch careers\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Build the entire list your one-word theme\u2014for instance, \u201cEarn\u201d or \u201cFewer\u201d<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s helpful to be concrete, and frame items as actions, not outcomes\u2014not \u201cLearn Italian\u201d but \u201cMemorize 5 new words every day\u201d or \u201cUse Duolingo every day\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Consider whether you\u2019re an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel\u2014take the free <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/quiz\/the-four-tendencies-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFour Tendencies\u201d personality quiz<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Create a compelling visual display of your list<\/li>\n<li>Review your list frequently\u2014I aim to review my list on the 23rd of every month<\/li>\n<li>Consider making a list of only <em>enjoyable<\/em> items! Especially you <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/four-tendencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obligers<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>Share a list with someone else, to work on aims together<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to vocabulary\u2014the same activity can be much more appealing, or not, depending on how we frame it, the vocabulary we use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>Don\u2019t worry about whether you\u2019ll be able to cross off all 23 items.<\/strong> Neither Elizabeth nor I has ever managed to complete an entire list! It\u2019s a very clarifying and creative exercise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also, it\u2019s a fun exercise to do with other people. Elizabeth and I have a great time talking about our lists together; sharing lists is a great way to spark conversation about interests, values, and aims. Try doing it with friends, family, or co-workers. You may find items that you\u2019d like to tackle together.<\/p>\n<p>Have you found any fresh ways to articulate and work towards your aims?
