Whether he was flexing the authority he possessed to move staff around the agency like chess pieces or inflating his ego by reminding his subordinates what an honor it was to work for him by comparing the privileged position we were all in to the millions of people who were putting in a hard and honest day\u2019s work in the food service or retail industries, or any other professions he looked down his nose at, his approach always seemed adversarial and arrogant. To no surprise, staff turnover was high, staff retention was low, and staff morale had plummeted to all new lows under his lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But working for him was a learning experience, nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving the workplace culture into the ground and obliterating your team\u2019s morale should not be a point of pride. We all know or have worked with a manager like this before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was bureaucratic flexing, not leading. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, to help identify the differences between a leader and a bureaucrat, please have a look at this list:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders engage in leading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats engage in politicking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders lead regardless of rank, position, title, or pedigree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats chase title, position, and power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders strive to improve the workplace culture for their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats advance personal agendas at the expense of the workplace culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders are people driven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats are personally driven.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/addicted2success.com\/quotes\/50-inspirational-john-maxwell-quotes\/\">\u201cA leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.\u201d \u2014John Maxwell<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders care about their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats care about how their people make them look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders sacrifice for their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats sacrifice their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders service their peoples\u2019 growth and success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats service the bottom line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders make new leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats collect followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders create teams and value their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats flex their position and power and make people feel small.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders are proactive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats are reactive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders build relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats build connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders inspire people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats leverage people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders inspire trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats keep their people in the dark and never show their full hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders work with their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats compete with their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders unify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats are divisive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders cultivate innovation, talent, and creative thinking to improve the team\u2019s output and success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats harvest malleable, compliant, and subservient people who don\u2019t threaten their authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders help their people win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats use their people to help them win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders retain their people and promote their advancement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats inspire their people to look for opportunities elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders lead organically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats manage through regulations and predesignated strictures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders attract high-value teammates because of how they treat their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats cycle low-value candidates using the organization\u2019s surplus or reserve candidate pool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders hold themselves to a high standard and coach their people when mistakes are made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats hold their people to a high standard and impose strict consequence when a regulation is broken. Their personal conduct is a matter of their own private business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders value people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats value procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders are approachable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats are unavailable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders are a part of the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats are above the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders are adaptable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats have little to no flexibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaders earn respect and show respect to their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bureaucrats demand respect with written policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dichotomy between good leadership and poor leadership is that you are either showing up for your people or expecting your people to show up for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t like working here, I\u2019m not going to force any of you to stay.
