The thing is, if you\u2019ve seen a war movie or two, you\u2019re likely to know what it is (even if you aren\u2019t familiar with the term):<\/p>\n<p>A soldier in shell shock, gazing blankly into the distance with their eyes wide and vacant. It\u2019s the kind of look that feels like it could pierce right through you, yet the person is a million miles away.<\/p>\n<p>This is what happened to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/peter-lucas-4817488b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Lucas<\/a><\/strong>, a retired Marine who\u2019s now a transformational coach and CEO of A Life On Purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This term, the thousand-yard stare, for me personally, is more than just a blank stare into nothingness<\/em>,\u201d he tells Mindvalley Blog. It\u2019s something that\u2019s shown up in his life in more ways than he\u2019d care to admit.<\/p>\n<p>So what does the \u201cthousand-yard stare\u201d mean, especially if you\u2019re not tied to the military? Understanding its significance in terms of mental health can help you recognize the signs and make dealing with your own difficult emotions (or helping others) a little less daunting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s important to note: If you notice yourself or someone you care about exhibiting this stare frequently, it\u2019s advisable to seek professional help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-thousand-yard-stare\">What Is a Thousand-Yard Stare?<\/h2>\n<p>Originating from the military lexicon, the thousand-yard stare is used to describe the blank, emotionless expression of someone who has experienced significant trauma or psychological distress. Their eyes are often wide and vacant, with a withdrawn and unresponsive way about them.<\/p>\n<p>Peter himself, having been exposed to explosions, sirens, gunfire, and even \u201c<em>mangled human flesh<\/em>,\u201d found that it was a way for his mind to \u201c<em>deal with all that I have seen and experienced over a long period of time<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, this type of shell shock isn\u2019t simply zoning out. Rather, it\u2019s a way for the brain to cope with overwhelming emotions tied to trauma.<\/p>\n<p>What happens is, the nervous system gets flooded with stress hormones, which can be incredibly difficult to process. In response, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5283511\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brain activates a defense mechanism called dissociation<\/a>, which disrupts activity in areas like the amygdala (involved in processing emotions) and the medial prefrontal cortex (responsible for self-awareness).<\/p>\n<p>Now, dissociation (of which the thousand-yard stare is one) is a way of mentally detaching oneself from a situation or memory that\u2019s too painful to process head-on. It creates a psychological distance from the traumatic experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>So often, when we feel uncomfortable, we try to escape it<\/em>,\u201d explains <strong>Jennifer Partridge<\/strong>, a tapping expert and trainer of Mindvalley\u2019s <em>Tapping into Emotional Mastery<\/em> Quest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We may avoid it through scrolling on social media, numb it through substances, food, and sex, or simply try our very best to put on a happy face<\/em>.\u201d (Or, in this case, going off into the nether regions of your mind with that zombie look on your face.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s kind of like hitting the pause button on emotions.<\/strong> It gives a person some space to breathe and manage the overwhelming feelings before they can fully re-engage with what happened.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-gets-it\">Who gets it?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<em>This typically happens to soldiers after they see something traumatic in the field of battle<\/em>,\u201d says Sterling Gordon Fournier in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@idksterling\/video\/7211355885954911534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok video<\/a>, which has garnered more than half a million views to date.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s not exclusive to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/marines-in-mindvalley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marines<\/a> with combat stress, like Peter.<\/p>\n<p>So who else can get the thousand-yard stare? Firefighters, police officers, and emergency responders, to name a few.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But still, if you\u2019re career doesn\u2019t revolve around seeing trauma, here are some other situations that might trigger it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse<\/li>\n<li>Accidents or injuries<\/li>\n<li>Grief and loss<\/li>\n<li>Chronic illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s important to remember is, the thousand-yard stare isn\u2019t a diagnosis in and of itself. It\u2019s a symptom that can point to deeper emotional issues.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-thousand-yard-stare-in-children\">The Thousand-Yard Stare In Children<\/h2>\n<p>Undoubtedly, seeing a thousand-yard stare in a child can be incredibly concerning. Here\u2019s what it might look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Withdrawn and disconnected<\/strong>, staring into space for long periods with a vacant expression.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid eye contact<\/strong> or make fleeting eye contact that seems distant and unfocused.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Numb or emotionally flat<\/strong>, not reacting as strongly to happy or sad situations as they usually would.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appear listless or have a slumped posture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just like adults, children might use this type of dissociation as a coping mechanism for psychological trauma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-causes-the-thousand-yard-stare\">What Causes the Thousand-Yard Stare?<\/h2>\n<p>Anything can trigger the thousand-yard stare\u2014from witnessing violence to experiencing neglect or abuse to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/trauma-bond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trauma bonds<\/a>, even seemingly less dramatic events like a difficult move or a bullying situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>When trauma takes place, whether that be emotional, mental, or physical trauma, often our brain and nervous system store a feeling of not being safe<\/em>,\u201d says Jennifer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK207191\/#:~:text=Dissociation%20can%20also%20occur%20during,the%20experience%20from%20the%20individual.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Studies<\/a> have shown that when people experience extreme stress, their brains may activate dissociation as a defense mechanism. By doing so, they can create a psychological distance from the painful reality they face.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a kind of emotional self-preservation mechanism. One that allows them to numb themselves to the emotional intensity of their trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>My inability to detach myself from my experiences<\/em> <em>from the past<\/em>,\u201d Peter shares,<em> <\/em>\u201c<em>robbed me of the ability to remain present<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s incredibly important to understand that dissociation is a temporary coping mechanism. Therefore, treating someone with it focuses more on addressing the underlying cause\u2014trauma.<\/p>\n<p>So how is the thousand-yard stare treated?<\/p>\n<p>Therapy often takes center stage here.<\/p>\n<p>Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can equip you with tools to manage stress and cope with difficult situations in healthier ways. What\u2019s more, techniques like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) can help reduce the emotional intensity of memories.<\/p>\n<p>These methods can be supported with complementary therapy. Here are a few to consider:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-eft-emotional-freedom-technique-tapping\">1. EFT (emotional freedom technique) tapping<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mindvalley.com\/eft-tapping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EFT tapping<\/a> involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on the traumatic memory or negative emotions.
