I believe that leaders aren\u2019t born, they\u2019re made \u2013\u00a0and that anyone can become a leader if they put in the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/leader-vs-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cultivate the right skills and mindset.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I certainly never considered myself to be a leader when I was younger. Like many <a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/success-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other successful leaders<\/a>, I didn\u2019t become a leader overnight. As a child, I struggled with self-esteem issues that took me years to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until I started working with my mentor W. Clement Stone that I began to believe in my self-worth and understand that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. Authoritarian Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>An authoritarian leader is someone with an autocratic leadership style \u2013\u00a0they take control over all decisions and make those decisions quickly and confidently without much input from others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While their \u201cautocratic leadership\u201d style makes them effective in a crisis, authoritarian leaders can quash their team\u2019s confidence and creativity and make it hard for them to collaborate and innovate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why autocratic leaders must find a balance between maintaining control and taking decisive action \u2014\u00a0as well as encouraging more input from others and trusting their team\u2019s insight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Participative Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>A participative leader, also known as a \u201cdemocratic leader,\u201d values others\u2019 opinions and input. And those who are unintentionally laissez-faire because they are reluctant to assert control and take responsibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re a delegative leader, it\u2019s important to know when to step in and provide enough direction so that everyone is united in pursuing a shared vision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Transactional Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>Transactional leaders, also known as \u201cmanagerial leaders,\u201d inspire others into action by offering rewards for when goals are met and potential penalties for when there\u2019s failure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A transactional leader can be good at implementing order and systems and letting people know what\u2019s expected of them. But they can sometimes lack empathy and be so stuck on their systems that they don\u2019t accommodate the individual needs of their team members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In order to be more effective, transactional leaders must work hard to ensure that the \u201cgive and take\u201d culture they create is flexible enough to honor their team\u2019s unique situations and contributions while making their members feel valued rather than replaceable.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Transformational Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>Transformational leaders are those exceptional people who are able to inspire and energize their team to implement their vision and use praise, encouragement, and <a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/how-to-show-appreciation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empathy to inspire others<\/a> to show up as their best selves and strive for the highest possible outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also known as \u201cvisionary leaders,\u201d they attract and cultivate empowered, loyal, and highly motivated employees.
