Then, you will find it easier to handle all of life\u2019s multi-tasking without having to feel overwhelmed all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Setting Future Goals<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been following me for a while, you know that I\u2019m a big fan of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackcanfield.com\/blog\/powerful-goal-setting-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goal-setting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When you don\u2019t set goals for yourself, it\u2019s almost impossible to achieve your personal and career aspirations and create a life you truly love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BUT there is admittedly a \u201cdark side\u201d to goal-setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your goals are so big that you can\u2019t figure out how to get started on them \u2013 or when they\u2019re impossible to achieve in a certain time frame \u2013 they can actually backfire and cause you so much pressure and anxiety, you abandon your efforts and give up on your dreams altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Work &amp; Financial Concerns<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent poll found that 73% of Americans said that money was the single biggest cause of anxiety in their lives, followed by politics and work. And when we\u2019re going through periods of economic turmoil, financial uncertainty and concerns with work (and its continued stability) become even more prevalent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Past Traumatic Experiences<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people have lived through some form of trauma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it came in the form of abusive or strained relationships with family members, failed romantic relationships, painful losses, or crushing failures, by the time you\u2019re an adult you have likely experienced at least one traumatic event that is still impacting you in a very real way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until you do the work to heal from your trauma, the negative emotions you associate with it can arise at unexpected moments and cause a stress response that will prevent you from performing at your best.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Family, Relationship, &amp; Health Concerns<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our family and relationships can be the source of our greatest joy and happiness, as well as our greatest source of disappointment and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one can break your heart like someone you truly love!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when you are in conflict with the people you love, or when they (or you) are experiencing health issues, the anxiety and negative emotions can sometimes be paralyzing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Feeling Overwhelmed or Helpless<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve looked at the factors that can cause you to feel overwhelmed, it\u2019s crucial to know the most common signs that appear when stress starts to dominate our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Increased Forgetfulness<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you noticed one task after another slipping off your to-do list and out of your awareness?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice yourself forgetting things more often \u2013 and people are increasingly having to remind you of promises not kept or obligations not fulfilled \u2013 that\u2019s a good sign that you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed by something.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Getting Confused Easily<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it harder for you to keep track of things and understand what\u2019s happening in any given situation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That could be a sign that whatever is causing you to stress is taking so much of your mental energy, you don\u2019t have much left over for anything else.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Experiencing Trouble Focusing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling overwhelmed is a huge distraction. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve found yourself reading the same words on a page or screen over and over but having a hard time making them stick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, you\u2019ve struggled to pay attention to other people\u2019s words because the source of your stress is causing unwanted intrusive thoughts. If you want to stay on top of your tasks, you have to be able to focus on them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Reduced Ability to Solve Problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re feeling stressed, the constant mental and energetic drain makes it harder for you to solve problems, which means you\u2019ll find it harder to make good decisions and achieve the outcomes you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Negative Thoughts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re feeling like you\u2019re always battling to improve your circumstances and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/fear-of-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can lead to a rise in negative thoughts such as, \u201cI\u2019ll never win,\u201d and \u201cI deserve to fail,\u201d which become a self-fulfilling prophecy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find it hard to maintain a positive mindset and focus on your tasks and goals, it\u2019s time for you to do something different.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Low Energy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living in a state of constant stress is mentally and physically exhausting! It drains you of energy and makes it even harder for you to achieve your goals and thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why, if you find yourself frequently feeling overwhelmed, I strongly encourage you to take action and focus on doing something about it! The world will thank you when you do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Deal with Constantly Feeling Overwhelmed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that overwhelm CAN be dealt with. And it begins with a focus on taking one small thing at a time and believing that your efforts will be worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Secret To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed | Jack Canfield\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3FSjThyYejk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pinpoint the Primary Source<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step to stop feeling overwhelmed is to identify the top one or two things that are causing you the most burden right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself the question, \u201cWhat one or two things, if taken off my plate would alleviate 80% of the stress that I feel right now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write down the answers so you get them out of your head and onto a piece of paper or a screen where you can start the process of resolving them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Create a List<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overwhelm comes when you always feel like you have to do too much \u2013 so a great way to alleviate it is to create a \u201cDo Not Do\u201d list of things you commit to NOT do because you know they are an unnecessary waste of time and energy that would be better spent doing something else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Items on your \u201cDo Not Do\u201d list could include: mindless scrolling on social media, getting into arguments with strangers in the comments, everybody else\u2019s laundry, saying \u201cyes\u201d to any new volunteer requests, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing things on a list like this will help you remember where you DON\u2019T want to waste your time and energy so you can focus on tasks that reinvigorate and empower you rather than drain and deplete you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Set Boundaries &amp; Say No<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to stay committed to your \u201cDo Not Do\u201d list and ensure you have the time and energy you need to deal with everything on your plate, you\u2019re going to have to learn how to set boundaries and say \u201cno\u201d to people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be challenging \u2013 especially if you\u2019re a natural people-pleasure. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/finding-balance-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finding balance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is key to managing your daily life. Just remember that you\u2019re not saying \u201cno\u201d to THEM \u2013 you\u2019re saying \u201cYES\u201d to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Delegate When You Can<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you currently doing that can be done by someone else?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe your partner or one of the kids can commit to making one or more meals a week, so you can use that time for something else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you could start sharing school-run duties with a neighbor and take turns running the kids back and forth from school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you could hire a teenager to mow your lawn and weed so you don\u2019t have to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">List every task that can be done by someone else and delegate them as much as possible one thing at a time so you can liberate more of your time to spend on the things that are most necessary or important to your well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Take Care of Yourself<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re in a state of overload, taking care of yourself might seem self-indulgent or selfish. After all, there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much to be done<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 how can you justify expending any energy on yourself when there\u2019s limited time and so many other tasks you need to do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the fact is, if you want to take care of ANYTHING \u2013 your family, a big project at work, your personal or career goals \u2013 you absolutely have to take care of yourself first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, you won\u2019t have the energy, mindset, and sustained motivation you need to achieve your goals while dealing with whatever life throws at you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I encourage you to replace your stress response with a relaxation response and actively focus on relieving the tension in your mind and body whenever you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go for a walk, take a bubble bath, do yoga or some other form of mindful movement or stretching \u2013 whatever will help you feel calmer. By giving your mind and body what they need to thrive, you bolster your capacity for stress management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Practice Mindful Meditation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meditation is another powerful practice that you can use as a relaxation response to <a href=\"https:\/\/jackcanfield.com\/blog\/stop-feeling-overwhelmed\/\">stop feeling overwhelmed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll find many guided meditations online that walk you through a process of releasing the thoughts that are causing you to feel stressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even five minutes of breathing-focused awareness every day will calm your mind and soothe your heart and soul so you are better able to think clearly and make smart decisions that will help you get the results you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So whenever you notice yourself feeling stressed, I encourage you to take a few moments to breathe in and out and allow yourself to focus only on the rise and fall of your breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Let Go of Overwhelm &amp; Find Peace<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overwhelm is a huge drain on your time and energy\u2026 your happiness and fulfillment\u2026 your ability to get the results \u2013 even your physical health!
