When our family visited cathedrals in France, for example, she wanted to leave immediately.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She has acted similarly\u00a0upon\u00a0visiting a Buddhist temple or being in the presence of art with a strong sacred theme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She is also very much against any mention of prayer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We first started noticing this when she was about age 4 or 5 and we are not sure of its roots.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are not a “religious” family, however,\u00a0my husband practices yoga and we are\u00a0both interested in meditation and spiritual topics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As parents, we would also like to help nurture our daughter’s spiritual awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She is a shy, very sensitive\u00a0child, but overall healthy and happy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your daughter may not like churches and temples and religious art, but that doesn\u2019t mean she resists spirituality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It could be that she has some preexisting aversion to orthodoxy, ritual and institutional religion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can talk to her about how all these forms and traditions of the divine come out of an unmanifest, formless, timeless experience that is her own deepest essence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But one can live this spiritual content of life without having to rely on external forms or images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If she prefers a bare-bones spiritual experience, you can tell her that there are simple practices, not prayer, that allow her to directly experience this core essence within.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If she\u2019s not interested now, that\u2019s fine, but if she is, then you can have her instructed into a silent meditation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
