Do you find that there\u2019s less dignity and grace today? There\u2019s no escaping folks who rant on social media, flaunt their success, and rip you apart if you\u2019re not in complete agreement with their views. What happened to folks with class \u2014 people who set high standards for themselves, live with honor and integrity, treat others with dignity and respect<\/a>, and serve as exemplary role models? In other words, people who make a positive difference in the world and are proud to live that way.<\/p>\n

Some people are toxic. They\u2019re selfish, rude, intolerant, self-centered, close-minded, judgmental, lazy, envious \u2014 and the list goes on. In their world of \u201canything goes,\u201d they say and do things without any regard for the damage they\u2019re leaving in their wake. The fact is, their behavior is having a massive impact on their personal relationships, reputation, and self-respect. What does this lack of dignity and grace teach our kids?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s get real. I\u2019m not expecting everyone to be a saint, but instead of ranting about changing the world, why don\u2019t we take a moment and look in the mirror.<\/p>\n

Virtue isn\u2019t demanding more of others; it\u2019s expecting more of yourself.<\/p>\n

Show Some Dignity and Grace<\/h3>\n

Living with dignity and grace begins and ends with you.<\/em> Here are 15 guidelines to help keep you on course:<\/p>\n

Lead by example.<\/strong><\/span> Be conscious of how your behavior affects others. People look up to you. Don\u2019t let them down.<\/p>\n

Be accountable for your actions.<\/strong><\/span> You have the freedom to choose, but you\u2019re not free from the consequences<\/a> of those choices.<\/p>\n

Watch your words.<\/strong><\/span> Actions have consequences; words do, too. As the saying goes, \u201cyou can\u2019t unring a bell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Develop win-win relationships.<\/strong><\/span> Strive for win-win<\/a> rather than winner-take-all. After all, winning doesn\u2019t have to be at someone\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n

Show mutual respect.<\/strong><\/span> Treating people with dignity and respect says more about you than trying to prove how important you are.<\/p>\n

Be open to feedback.<\/strong><\/span> Some people think that if they don\u2019t know their faults, they don\u2019t have any. If you\u2019re blind to your flaws<\/a>, you can\u2019t address them.<\/p>\n

Keep an open<\/span> mind.<\/strong><\/span> Challenge your thinking by embracing\u00a0differing viewpoints<\/em>\u00a0rather than limiting debate to like-minded people.<\/p>\n

Listen more\u2026speak less.<\/strong><\/span> Try to find the merit in others\u2019 arguments. Communication is a two-way street. It requires more than talking.<\/p>\n

Take the shoe-on-the-other-foot test.<\/strong><\/span> Next time you evaluate whether something is fair and equitable, ask yourself how you would feel if the tables were turned.<\/p>\n

Show some compassion.<\/strong><\/span> Give of yourself. But remember, a good intention<\/em> is like an idea that you keep to yourself. If you don\u2019t do something with it, it\u2019s like it never existed.<\/p>\n

Pay your dues.<\/strong><\/span> You don\u2019t <\/em>get what you want; you get what you deserve. If you\u2019re not willing to make the commitment, don\u2019t complain about the outcome.<\/p>\n

Be humble.<\/strong><\/span> There\u2019s no need to boast about your achievements, because acting with humility and grace says volumes about you.<\/p>\n

Be a graceful loser. <\/strong><\/span>Being a good loser<\/a> helps build character, provides valuable lessons, and mentally prepares you for your next challenge.<\/p>\n

Remember your roots.<\/strong><\/span> As you climb the ladder of success, reach down and pull others along with you. In addition, thank people\u2026and give credit to everyone who helped you along the way.<\/p>\n

Do what\u2019s right rather than what\u2019s convenient.<\/strong><\/span> Set high standards, remain true to your values, listen to your conscience, and do yourself proud. Remember, you have to live with yourself for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n

Before Challenging Others, Challenge Yourself<\/h3>\n

Most people believe that they\u2019ll be viewed positively if they act with dignity and grace. What\u2019s more, it\u2019ll help to make the world a better place. True. But that isn\u2019t the real reason you should act this way. Even though proper behavior significantly impacts how you\u2019re perceived by others, it dramatically affects the way you view yourself. As Pope Francis said, \u201cHuman dignity is the same for all human beings: when I trample on the dignity of another, I am trampling on my own.\u201d Show some dignity and grace and make yourself proud.<\/p>\n
