Studies have found that people often overestimate how much external achievements or material gains will boost their well-being, while underestimating the importance of daily habits, relationships, and personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, happiness isn\u2019t one-size-fits-all. What brings joy and fulfillment to one person may not work for another. So before you can figure out how to be happier in 2025, there\u2019s another question you should try to answer first: <em>Who am I? <\/em>By understanding yourself\u2014your priorities, tendencies, and habits\u2014you can create a plan tailored to your unique nature.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover your \u201cwhat to do next\u201d for happiness<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to creating a happier life, the first step is understanding what will make the biggest difference right now. Many of us try to tackle everything at once\u2014health, career, relationships, hobbies\u2014but spreading yourself too thin can lead to frustration and burnout. By narrowing your focus to the area that will most improve your happiness, you set yourself up for success.<\/p>\n<p>What areas of your life feel out of balance? Is it your relationships, your career, your health, or something else entirely? Taking the time to reflect on this question can help you identify what matters most.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you need help answering this question\u2013and many people do!\u2013give the <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/quiz\/the-habits-for-happiness-quiz\/\">Habits for Happiness Quiz<\/a> a try.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified your \u201cwhat to do next,\u201d you can move forward.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design your year around your aims<\/h2>\n<p>The next step after identifying your \u201cwhat\u201d is to make a plan. New year\u2019s resolutions work for some people, but certainly not for everyone. Over the years, I\u2019ve developed the <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/design-your-year-2025\/\">Design Your Year<\/a> approach as a flexible, less intimidating way to make progress toward my aims\u2013while still leaving room for whimsy and fun.<\/p>\n<p>Design Your Year includes three tools:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A one-word theme to sum up what you want to get out of your year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A list of aims you\u2019d like to make progress toward, based on the year (e.g., \u201c25 for \u201925)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A year-long challenge, based on the year (e.g. \u201cRead 25 in \u201925\u2013read for 25 minutes each day in 2025)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Breaking down your aims into specific themes and actions makes it easier to take consistent, meaningful steps. <\/p>\n<p>Whatever approach you take, the important thing is to make sure it works <em>for you.\u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s one of my Secrets of Adulthood: You\u2019re unique\u2013just like everyone else. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consider your Tendency<\/h2>\n<p>Even the most carefully crafted plans can fail if they don\u2019t reflect what\u2019s true about you. Are you a morning person or a night person? An abstainer or a moderator? Do you need accountability\u2013or resist it?<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, understanding <em>how you respond to expectations<\/em> can make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>In my book <em>The Four Tendencies<\/em> I identified <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/four-tendencies\/\">four personality types<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Upholders<\/strong> respond readily to outer and inner expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Questioners<\/strong> will meet an expectation <em>if<\/em> they think it makes sense.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Obligers<\/strong> meet outer expectations but struggle to meet inner ones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rebels<\/strong> resist all expectations, inner and outer alike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified your Tendency (take the free <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/quiz\/the-four-tendencies-quiz\/\">Four Tendencies Quiz<\/a> if you aren\u2019t sure), you can adapt your strategies to work with your nature instead of against it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re an Obliger who struggles to stick with personal goals, finding an accountability partner can help keep you on track. Similarly, a Rebel who hates rigid plans might thrive with a more flexible, choose-your-own-adventure approach. <a href=\"https:\/\/gretchenrubin.com\/getting-started-habits\/\">Find an approach to building habits that works for you.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your happier year<\/h2>\n<p>Happiness isn\u2019t something that happens by chance\u2014it\u2019s something you can cultivate with self-knowledge and thoughtful planning.
