I was talking with a friend about a pretty big business decision several months back. There were several directions they could go and while we were talking, I asked a question in the flow of the conversation:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the right way to do this?<\/em><\/p>\n

The answer was super clear to both of us.<\/p>\n

Of course there were obstacles and issues (some pretty substantial), but they seemed pretty trivial in comparison to doing something that was a clearly \u201csuboptimal\u201d decision from the start. And one decision stood out from the rest.<\/p>\n

Since that conversation, that question has been lingering in the back of my head about everything I do:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s The Right Way To Do This?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Often times you can get stuck building out long pro\/cons lists of everything. Everything factor get it\u2019s own unique weighting and the decision tree gets complicated.<\/p>\n

You start listing out the reason something is impossible \u2013 and they all start to seem equally \u201cimpossible\u2019 and the decision gets confusing.<\/p>\n

The question that seems to clear the air and organize all my thoughts is:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the right way to do this?<\/p>\n

Can you do that?<\/em><\/p>\n

If, \u201cYes\u201d \u2192 What needs to happen to pull that off?<\/p>\n

If \u201cNo\u201d \u2192 What would you have to change to make that happen? Or, can you stop doing this and do something else entirely?<\/p>\n

Why This Works<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you start anything \u2013 the most important thing is to get unstuck. You need to build momentum \u2013 any sort of the kind \u2013 in any direction possible.<\/p>\n

Fight and scratch however you can to get it.<\/p>\n
