Question:
Hi Deepak, My question is, what is your take on the origins of pain? The pain that I’m referring to is of the primordial part of human nature that has existed within us before the arrival of the ego. My own understanding of the ego is that it is the defense mechanisms we’ve developed in order to not feel pain. From where did it originate? What is the relationship between pain and our true nature, and perhaps, love?

This more existential kind of pain you are talking about is much bigger than physical pain delivered by neurological pathways. You are right that it is primordial pain, but you are mistaken in thinking it preceded the ego. That pain originated with the sense of separateness that gave rise to the ego and the subsequent belief that our existence and survival are tied to whatever happens to our personality and body. The awakened awareness that is no longer identified with the personality and the feelings in the body is free from the primordial pain you describe.
