33 Expressions That Have Stood the Test of Time

Do you remember pearls of wisdom that you heard growing up? They were valuable lessons that were passed down from people who cared about you. In fact, I’m sure you imparted the same wisdom to others you know as well. Some of the expressions served as inspiration while others offered tried-and-true advice about attaining happiness, achieving success, and living a good life.

The fact is that even though the world is changing at a rapid pace, this wisdom is as true today as it was hundreds of years ago. As Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, the French critic, said, “The more things change the more they are the same.”

Times may change, but your core values don’t.

The Best Advice You Can Give Others

This is by no means an exhaustive list. I’m sure you have favorite expressions of your own.

Some folks think that because we’ve progressed in so many areas, everything from the past should be abandoned. But as George Santayana, the philosopher, said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Lessons in life will be repeated until they are learned.

If you concur with that premise, what lessons are most meaningful to you? Do you live in conformity with those principles or are they hollow phrases? The point being, if you want others to abide by those tenets, the best way to inculcate them is to lead by example. So, identify expressions that are most meaningful to you and begin to pass the lessons down to people you care about. As the Dalai Lama said, “Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.”
